VDT made $1,727,767 yesterday! That's a 5% increase!

Excellent. At this point, I'll be happy if VDT breaks $100 million. That would mean VDT would have the same domestic total to budget ratio as PC, and not be a flop. They key is for VDT to have strong winter legs, something LWW had and PC didn't. This is a good sign that it will.

Strong legs - and solid DVD/BD sales. Fox will need some convincing about going forward with this franchise.

Compare that to LWW which dropped 12.5% in its first Tuesday.

It's good that it went up, but it's not a fair comparison with LWW, since that opened MUCH higher, and even though it dropped it still made more on the same Tuesday. Now it can be compared to Golden Compass and Eragon, both having had similar releases. And those two dropped similarly on Monday, and dropped further on Tuesday whereas Dawn Treader rose. :)

Now: BOM gave their weekend report for Narnia, international. I posted on my previous post the specific numbers. Here's what BOM says:

Dawn Treader grossed $65.8 million for a total of $79.8 million, and opened in first place in all of its major territories. Its biggest market was Russia, where it had a series-best $10.9 million debut. Including last weekend's previews, it earned $7.1 million in Mexico and $5.3 million in South Korea, both of which were also highs for the Narnia franchise.

In other significant territories, though, Dawn Treader didn't fare so well compared to its predecessors. Its $6.3 million in France was similar to Prince Caspian's opening, but way off from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Things were even worse in the United Kingdom, where its $3.9 million take was less than half that of Prince Caspian, which was already down from the first movie. Dawn Treader sets out to add to its total with openings in Germany and Italy this weekend.

Actually, I just realized that every single movie in the top 10 increased on Tuesday, and VDT increased with by far the smallest percentage. :(

Whatever the reason for the increase, I don't think it had to do with VDT having good legs or good WOM now.

But here's the thing, with the exception of the Tourist, none of the other films were in their first week. It is normal for films to go up on Tuesday, but not on their FIRST Tuesday.

Also, films normally drop about 10% on Wednesdays, so we'll have to wait and see how VDT did today.

The good news is- not only it is still numero uno, but it made more money on Tuesday than what it made on Monday. Which may be a good sign for the long term.

I hate to be a downer here, but Narnia did really, really bad in the UK. From the numbers I'm seeing that is not good. Even though it's doing better then Caspian in some markets, the UK was a huge market. It really needed to do better there to pass Caspian s OS numbers. Also it sounds like they gave it huge publicity in that country. It's hard to believe that the English people didn't support a movie based on a classic by an English author. Especially after a royal premiere. This is with 3D. I guess people just don't care about Narnia anymore. At least not in England and the USA.

Don't be sorry - you're only being realistic. VDT's debut in the US, UK, and Australia is downright bad. The French debut wasn't so hot, either. There's no good way to spin the numbers. It's unfortunate, and fans can try to get excited over every little seemingly good bit of news, but this film has a long way to go to breaking even.

VDT may have long legs...Fox says they think it will. That should sound familiar, because Disney said the exact same thing after PC disappointed in its first weekend.

hopefully VDT does have good legs, but one thing to remember: Box Office in May is totally different from Box Office in December. That said, it doesn't guarantee VDT good legs, but the chances are better.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean diddly-squat. In addition to the official $155 million budget, Fox and Walden spent a reported $100 million to market the film. Also, film studios typically get only 55% of the domestic gross (theaters have to make money too ;) ), and the percentage is even lower overseas. So VDT would have to gross much more than $400 million worldwide to break even.

This is why Prince Caspian was considered a failure, even though it's $419 million worldwide gross looks great compared to the $225 million budget.

Right.

If they can get 100 million domestically and about 300 million worldwide, then there is a decent chance that they would continue the series since they would then be turning a profit.

They could then make The Silver Chair for between 100-120 million and cut down a bit on the CGI. Then, all they have to do is hope for a good advertising campaign, and they start raking in the dough. :)
