Maybe one of the slaves was a former chef and his/her worst nightmare is having to cook an endless buffet and that's what the people ate and drank for the 20 odd years they were in the DI.

And someone else's nightmare could be having to wash endless dishes.

^ I agree about how "feeding the sould to the DI" is ridiculous. I wonder why the people who buy the slaves would waste their money buy having the slaves eaten by darkness.

Unless they are rather primitive and are trying to appease the darkness which seems to be getting a little too close for comfort.

Yes, but why *buy* them? They're capturing these people by force, they aren't voluntarily signing up for slavery. So why not just capture people and pitch them into the Dark Island?

Perhaps that's what's so terrible about Gumpas in the movie: he holds power and will send a 'tribute' sacrifice to the Dark Island to appease the darkness. (A bit like the story of Theseus and the Minotaur) The regular people are actually chosen, but they can buy a slave to take their place, thus perpetuating a cycle which Gumpas can live off of (slave tax, bribes, etc). Not how it was in the books, but feasible in the movie.

Well how do we know that they are buying them to sacrifice them, it could just be a faulty detail in the storybooks(There are many), it is probably just capturing them then sending them directly to the DI

Is it just me, or is that lightning off in the distance (to the left)? It looks like a storm cloud formation. It could be the Dark Island.
