This continues the topic originally started here.
As the filming of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader moves along, I've been tracking locations the production team uses to present the world of Narnia on film. If I can firmly identify a location, I will put a placemark of it on Google Maps.
The project sort of grew. Each Chronicles of Narnia movie has a it's own Google Maps page. Seems less cluttered this way.
Production Locations in Google Maps:
• The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
• Prince Caspian
• The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The overview of a set at Barrandov Studios can give you a sense of scale on how big the Telmarine Castle was, as it is clearly visible. Just shortly to the north-west of the set are the streets created for the set of Brooklyn from Babylon A.D. The Cair Paravel ruins set is visible in the overhead images too.
It is fun trying to figure out what the prodution team has in mind when a particular site is selected. The Dawn Treader location is rather straightforward; the school is a little more difficult to figure out.
Keep a sharp lookout for locations!!
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
I was just about to ask whether you were going to open this thread up again! Still plenty of unanswered questions left over from the previous thread, though may have to wait for further developments on some of those before we can draw conclusions about them (Jumpinpins, Southport, etc)
In the meantime, one website i thought you might enjoy was this website for ImaginAction, a location-scouting company based in Australia:
http://www.imaginaction.com.au
If you look at their resume, you will see that not only did they work on the last two Narnia films, but they are also working on Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well. Not that their website has anything in the way of direct VDT images or information, but it is kind of cool to browse through some of the beach photos in their image library, and wonder whether or not the photographer had Narnia in mind when taking it.
Though, perhaps as something of a tease, there are a few password-secured galleries in their image gallery which are quite intriguing. First there is the gallery "Location Images" and its sub-galleries "Island Reference" and "Coastal Reference" plus there are several galleries for "SE QLD" (south-east Queensland *wink*) under the gallery called "Locations IA012". Perhaps its all nothing, but one can't help but wonder....
Took me a few to get this open again. Wanted to get the Chronicles of Narnia separated into their individual maps.
So true. Many questions remain.
It does seem imaginaction has stayed busy with the Chronicles of Narnia, and Walden Media. I love the images the site includes, some of which could easily be seen in Narnia. Thanks again for this find, icarus!
Admittedly, until I started fooling with the maps, I had absolutely no clue just how much the professional location scout contributed to the selection of a filming location. Narnia felt rather compact with everything reasonably close together; this illusion was blown when I saw all the far flung locations used for filming.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
Did you see this quote at the end of one of the stories on today's news page?
Filming was due to be completed at Cleveland Point by today, with the cast and crew also filming for two days this week at a "covered set" in a Cleveland warehouse, set up for filming on days when weather prevented outside filming at Cleveland Point.
http://www.baysidebulletin.com.au/news/ ... px?src="rss"
A mysterious warehouse location in Cleveland? At first i thought they just meant at WarnerRoadshow, but thats not really a warehouse, nor is it in Cleveland, nor was it set up specifically for bad-weather filming.
Any number of set-based scenes they could of filmed in there really, but perhaps interior shots of the ship's cabin might seem a reasonable guess. Any clues on Google earth for a Warehouse in Cleveland?
That metropolitan area around Brisbane is huge.
I humored myself and gave the area a look. Finally found Sea World at Cleveland Point ... not sure how I could've missed it. A warehouse location in that area? That certainly is a needle in a haystack (pick your cliche).
I can imagine no one would even much notice unless something really drew attention. Thus I appreciate the spy reports even more. Would not have known about TSS unless someone said something.
I like the idea it could be an interior of the Dawn Treader.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
Purely by accident, whilst looking for something else, i found some new pictures of the MovieWorld Car Park set (or at least "new" in the sense that we didnt have them in the old topic i don't think) on an internet forum post:
http://www.lost-forum.com/showthread.php?p=270077831
The first few give a pretty good look at the overall design of the set. Just as the initial reports said, the set consists of a brickwall and some grass in front of a blue screen. Although we had already established it was for a Cambridge based street scene for the opening of the movie, it kind of confirms it if nothing else.
For the record, from the previous thread (thanks to PeaceAndLove i believe!) here are the earlier set-photos of this location for comparision:
http://www.baysidebulletin.com.au/slide ... px?id=7999
Scroll through the slideshow to find them.
Created a placemark for Cinesite in Google Maps. It is just up the street from Moving Picture Company.
Wondering when we will start seeing reports of other locations.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
The Bayside Bulletin article from the other day to announce the end of filming at Cleveland point revealed the location of the Warehouse filming location to be Russel Street in Cleveland (also with a picture of it)
http://www.baysidebulletin.com.au/news/ ... px?src="rss"
I also noticed the other day that the blog which originally contained the Jumpinpin location filming photos has now been made a password protected site:
Though the Narnia sites which reposted the images dont yet appear to have been asked to remove the photos, so perhaps it is just coincidence that the site has now been blocked off. But still, doesnt look like we will be able to get any more location information from him.
You rock, icarus! Thank you for finding that. Here is the location of The Warehouse on Russell Street, Cleveland, Qld, in Google Maps VDT Production Locations.
The building does not show up on Google Maps. It is new construction, currently for sale or lease. Looked at the listing with the realtor; almost feel sort of stalkerish now. Anyhoo, I would call it more office/retail space than a big old warehouse.
Noticed that person's blog was blocked. Wondering if he did not feel the need to attract attention from some crazed Narnia fans.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
An interesting bit of production location related news here. I'm sure you all remember the report some months back of an actor called Lee Ravitz listing a credit of "Dufflepud (Green Screen VFX Test Shots Only)" on his online resume, with the production company being "Purple Sail Ltd", the director being Angus Bickerton(one of VDTs visual effects producers) and with the filming location being Twickenham Studios in London.
Well, now on the official Twickenham Studios website, they have added to the list of recent productions with:
INVISIBLE ARMY Purple Sail Ltd (c/o The Senate)
Director: Barry Hemsley
http://www.twickenhamstudios.com/Recent ... ault.aspx#
"Invisible Army" being the not-so-secret codename for VDT,
"The Senate" being the VFX company based at Twickenham Studios, and Barry Hemsley (or Barrie Hemsley as he also seems to spell his name)
being another visual effects producer on VDT, and apparently the"VFX producer at Warner Bros"
Could it be that they did a fair bit more work on the movie at Twickenham Studios than just early VFX testing? As something else caught my eye today - a PDF document on the UK Film Council Website. It lists Voyage of the Dawn Treader as an "inward investment title" in its 2009 production reports. The document also says that "inward investment titles" are "films which are substantially financed and controlled from abroad (mostly from the USA) but shot in whole or part in the UK." Surely Dawn Treader would have to fufil the "shot part in the UK" bit for the UK Film Council to list Dawn Treader thusly?
http://www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/media/p ... Report.pdf
All of which reminds me of an even older rumor (link below), about the production scouting for locations in the UK. Strangely enough, it was seemingly for another Dufflepud related location, though since we know that the Dufflepud garden was built at Warner Roadshow studios, and that Roy Billing (chief Dufflepud) flew out to Australia to film his role, i would guess that is just a coincidence on that part.
Thank you for this find, icarus.
We certainly cannot rule out that some work on VDT will be completed or handled in the UK. Makes me wonder if it is related to the work Cinesite is doing.
Updated Google Maps with the location of Twickenham Studios.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
Some rather interesting information about the MovieWorld Carpark filming here, courtesy of the owners of a classic car used in the shooting. Apologies for the all caps on this, thats just the way it was on the PDF:

With regard to the bit i highlighted in bold - even though they are wrong about the "Oxford" part, i would be willing to bet they are still correct about the "University" part and that the opening scene will take place at Cambridge University (being that the book is set in Cambridge). Not hard to imagine people getting Oxford University and Cambridge University mixed up.
Here is the link for the original article quoted above, where you can also see a picture of the car in question:
And here are the previous two photo sets containing the Movie-World car park shooting:

And here are the pictures from the Southport School location, which probably ties in with the whole Cambridge University setting for the opening scenes:
A big, heartfelt thanks to Mr Ernie Malik! Learn more here.
Production Location Updates to Google Maps:
• Quarries, Yatala, Qld, Australia
• Whakaari/White Island, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Overall, I get the impression location filming is finished. Listening to the interview gives some good clues on what some locations are used for.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
It was great to hear about some of the exterior island locations. It does sound like location filming is finished but the full explanation of why Cleveland Point was chosen was very interesting.

There is definitely no "a" in definite.
The Mind earns by doing; the Heart earns by trying.
Oooh, White Island in New Zealand! I remember when the list of rumoured NZ locations came out all that time ago, i was looking through GoogleImages at some of the listed locations, and although White Island wasnt actually one of them, i still came across pictures of it numerous times and thought it would make a very cool Dawn Treader location!
My thoughts back then lead towards Dragon Island, if only for the fact that it has that white steam emanating from the middle of the island (being that its a volcano), and although its not the perfect dragon island location (its a bit too lacking in any sort of vegetation or trees) i would still stand by my initial thought for that. Unless of course Dark Island is going to have some sort of physicality to it, or Burnt Island is going to be included in the movie, im not too sure what else it could be. But in my opinion, its just too cool and unique a location for a movie like this to possibly pass on!
http://z.about.com/d/geology/1/0/S/A/whiteislandnz.jpg
The quarry location i would also guess at being Dragon Island too. Though i guess that is kind of obvious, given that the description of the Dragon's valley in VDT is pretty much near enough identical to that of a gravel quarry.
As for the other location information in that interview - confirmation (or near enough) that the Jumpinpin location was used for the edge of the world scenes. I think we all half suspected that, given that we saw the photos of the Aslan stand-in figure being filmed there, but i at least was thrown a bit by how early into production they shot that scene. I guess that puts and end to any thinking they were trying to shoot in a more-or-less chronological order as they did on the last two films.
