Nevermind the physics. It just undermines the idea of an ordinary crew discovering fantastical lands.
In the movie, it's going to be a fantastical crew discovering fantastical lands. I fear a lot of the magic will be lost.
It'd be hard to imagine a fantasy movie without a battle.
I cannot wrap my mind around this idea. What is it about fantasy that requires battle? Why do people think that if a movie takes place in another world, it must have action?
Let me get this straight Glumpuddle, you're saying magic+magic=non-magical. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that . The story isn't about an "ordinary" crew, it's about ordinary kids in an extraordinary world; and one of those ordinary kids learning to be a bit nicer and more imaginative to boot . Somehow, I don't see having a few Native Narnians on board as diminishing that story .
Having said that, I have to agree with you that battles are not a prerequisite for good Fantasy films . It's a shame that people have become so conditioned to equate war and combat with Fantasy (or fiction in general for that matter) that they can't imagine a story without it. Of course any story needs conflict, but conflict doesn't always have to be resolved with force.

Quite right! This is my point, GlumPuddle, hence the smilies I had there.
In going through this thread, I find that a lot of us - even if we are fine with having minotaurs on board the Dawn Treader - would prefer that they not be on board the Dawn Treader. So, the reason I think that minotaurs shouldn't be on the Dawn Treader is simply this: they don't HAVE to be on board the Dawn Treader. For crying out loud, if they HAD a purpose, if they HAD a legitimate reason, if they were a PROMINENT part of the story, then yes, let them be on board by all means. I can find no reason for them to be on board the Dawn Treader except as an ornament announcing: "Hey, we are from Narnia!" As far as I am concerned, Reepicheep is more than enough to fill that role, period.

You're correct. As far as the book is concerned there is no NEED for minotaurs. But no one has seen the movie yet and we don't know every situation the crew will face on their voyage. There may be something that calls for minotaurs in the script. We won't know untill we see the movie, then we can make a call as to whether or not the they were pointless.
^^ yes, it really does depend on weather or not they have good parts in the movie! if there is a good place for them in the script, then I don't mind. but I am suspicious of the fact that they might have just put them there so they could use Shane Rangi in another movie.....
not that that's a bad thing!

I will go as far as to agree that Minotaurs aren't a necessity . But the Narnians should have more representation than Reepicheep. I would be perfectly happy with a few Fauns, maybe a Centaur, perhaps a Dwarf or two and some other Narnians.

^^ it looks like there will be a lot of fauns! I am glad!
and now it sounds like one of the minotaurs will be talking to Eustace!

@ GB: So, you think that Narnia needs more representation than King Caspian and Reepicheep? Are you dissatisfied that C.S. Lewis only had one Narnian talking creature in VDT: a mouse? I don't know about you, but, to me, King Caspian and Reepicheep are sufficient enough to represent Narnia.

Yes, actually I was disappointed that CS Lewis only included One Indigenous Narnian in VoDT .

^I will admit I agree with GB, I too was disapointed with the lack of narnians.

I'm in double agreement GB and wolkloversk. I mean VDT is my favorite of the series but I felt it lacked a bit of narnian creatures. But at least we have magician's, serpent, mermaids, stars and dragons.

me too! and I think that's why they put more Narnian creatures on board the Dawn Treader - to have the creatures everyone has seen for the last two movies be on the ship!
I was thinking about this and I think this is why there are lots of Narnians on board:
for those who have never read the books but have seen the movies, they see the fauns and minotaurs and the rest and those are the Narnians to them. so when VotDT comes along and all you see is men on board (except for Reepicheep), then I can imagine those who have never read the books wondering where all the Narnians are!
I bet it's for consistancy! I am glad about it!

I can't figure out why a minotaur would want to sail...every one knows dwarfs sink, why? Because they are dense. C. S. Lewis noted this in PC. Minotaurs are not only dense but covered in fur, not to mention how bad hooves are for swimming. I completely oppose the idea of any kind of deviation from Jack's book, period. And i have to agree that they can serve little to no purpose on a ship for exploration, but if it was for conquering... and that my friends is the scariest thought of all, that they serve as battle muscle. I'm gonna have to go with glumpuddle on this, fantasy movies do not need battles and I wouldn't be happy having my favorite book of all time ruined by unnecessary action.
I am not, however, so completely opposed to fauns (they aren't dense and a goat can swim better than a cow) and the rest. Having more of the wonder of Narnia that the cinema has created for us isn't a bad thing and it does make it consistent if nothing else.

well, it can't be changed now.....so we will just have to see how it all works!
by the way, does anyone know how many minotaurs will be on board?
