Okay, let me start by saying that I understand its necessary to sell a movie. To show the scenes that will excite people the most. And I understand sometimes that trailers can mislead an audience in order to get them speculating. But what I can't accept is when the marketing team for a movie just lies to people. No, I'm not talking about the appearences of Peter and Susan (though that is misleading), but the line "The Witch Will Rise!" which is spoken as we see Tilda appear onscreen. Its wrong for a number of reasons. First of all its false advertisement. There is a difference between misleading an audience and flat out lying to them. This line pretty much says the White Witch is the main villian and that she will rise to power in this movie. That is far from the truth, as it has been confrimed the Witch is just a nightmare of Edmund's.
The only way this line could even be slightly justified is if it refers to the Emerald Witch (not likely), and the trailer is just showing the White Witch to mislead the casual audience. After all, Apted did say he would try to connect VotDT and SC and maybe the end of this movie shows or hints the Lady of the Green Kirtle planning an attack on Narnia.
Either way, its dishonest, but the latter isnt a complete lie. Is anyone else getting annoyed by this false advertising, or am I just overreacting? I just don't feel Lewis would approve.
Winter Is Coming
I don't really like it either. I think they should try and sell the story that is and not the story that sounds good. The story that is should be good enough to sell itself.

I try not to pay attention to what the narrator on trailers say. Trailers notoriously mix things up and out-and-out lie. So, honestly, I'm not too upset over the misleading advertisement because it's basically expected. I, in fact, prefer trailers that just have the floaty words and have any dialogue be from the movie (not that it's much truer, though).

Fox has not been very honest with their marketing. The upside, I suppose, is that since they've been lying so much the movie might end up 10 times better then they have been showing us. I mean, if they lied about this, who knows what else they might have lied about that has made us nervous? Maybe that's why everyone who has seen the movie likes it, it's nothing like the trailers.
Seeking comic book artist, PM for details.
I don't know about that. There is still green mist and collecting swords and Eustace fighting the sea serpent before his undragoning. We will see.

Dinode, marketing by it's very definition is dishonest. I'm not trying to make an excuse for Fox but it's not like Disney didn't also do it (and obviously other studios).
Josh, I don't agree with some of your thoughts, they're often very wacky but I think you're right on the money here.

Doctor Who - Season 11
I agree, Josh. I hate outright lies! And I also hate when the narrator says "and the only power to stop them..." when it shows clips of all 4 Pevensies.
The new TV spots make you believe...
1) The White Witch is the main villain.
2) All 4 kids are back.
3) The whole movie will be another epic battle between good and evil. (Actually, that's probably true, sadly.)
JUST LIKE LWW!!!
Unfortunately, as the often say, the first rule of show biz is butts in seats. The second rule is there are no other rules. Fox is making it clear that they are doing whatever it takes to sell tickets.
I keep wondering why on earth Fox wants people to think these things. If they want to keep the fans of the books to still watch the movies why are they doing this in the trailers? You would think that they would want to fool us that it was all correct to the book.
I really dislike this, but we must remember that this is just the advertising guys from Fox saying this, not the directors and the like.
I don't even mind misleading the audience. As long as whatever they show is in the film (Peter, Susan, White Witch) I don't care how it looks in the trailer.
I remember when watching LOST how misleading the trailers were. In one episode when making amends to Kate, Juliet says to her "I was afraid if I spoke to you it would seem like I was asking you to stay away from him[Sawyer]". The trailer cut out the first bit and all we hear Juliet say to Kate is "Stay away from him." Now that in itself is on the verge of lying, (making it appear to be romantic drama when there really is none), but it at least didnt show anything that wasnt in the episode.
Its just the fact that the voiceover just flat out lied. I mean really, are they THAT desperate.
Winter Is Coming
Well misleading is one thing and outright lying is something else.
Ok now that the forum is back online...
I can retype my post...
I'm also quite upset over the advertising. Infact it has me really worried, that it will actually negatively impact the boxoffice. Can we just get one trailer without any mention or appearance of the WW, Pete, or Su?! Just one?! That's all I ask (ok that and dropping the "High" from the "High King and Queen" line) But still its not too much to ask is it?

They're more scared than anything else is what I'm guessing. Scared that VDT will gross far less than PC the way PC did with LWW. The reality is we have to remember that a huge portion of the people going to see VDT will have not read the book. They're using every tactic they can to get those people to come, and that includes making the film seem just like LWW, the movie that grossed almost as much as a Harry Potter film - and apparently even if it means lying. At this point, I don't know why they just go whole hog and also say "All Four Pevensies are back!"
I agree that the narrator/voiceovers/just the promotion in general is just plain misleading. But on the other hand (I'm really trying to stretch to find positives from this) at least it's not one of those romcoms trailers where they give away the whole plot and the ending, and you're left thinking "why did I just waste two hours of my life when all I needed was the two minute trailer."

I know that film marketing is almost always deceitful, but the narrator outright lying is truly disappointing. How ironic to market a movie based upon a Christian novelist's work with deception and lies.
I really do think these tactics are going to hurt box office results, not from the book fans whom Fox clearly has no interest in courting, but the movie fans who have no knowledge of the book's plot and go in expecting to see the WW rampaging around the place and Susan and Peter on the VDT. Movies like VDT live and die by word of mouth and repeat viewings. If all the Peter and Susan fans go home disappointed and angry, they won't go back to see the film and won't give positive word of mouth. That's a lot more of a threat to this film than a handful of people on the internet expressing their dismay over the movie's plot.
