[Closed] Jill Pole - Name-drop at the end

I loved the little easter egg moment but then wondered why Jill was coming to visit Eustace, they don't know each other at this point in time.

Yes they did. There is a bit on page 10-11 in SC. Some of it goes like this:

"Then wash out last term if you can", said Eustace. "I was a different chap then..."
"Well, honestly, you were", said Jill.
"You think there has been a change then?" said Eustace.
'It's not only me", said Jill. "Everyone's been saying so. They've noticed it...".
"Why were you so different last term?" said Jill, presently.

I have to agree the name drop was a nice touch at the end and I like the idea of Jill Pole's parents and those of Eustace mixing socially. It would make sense that her parents would then send her along to Eustace if she had been having difficulties at school, especially if they don't know about Them bullying other children.

I've just had a further thought about the ending - Eustace's voiceover about what happened. If Silver Chair is made, following on just a few months after VDT (as the book does), it will make perfect sense. It also covers as an ending in case they don't make any further movies.

Now that is a good point. The filmmakers then have a good exit clause for the Caspian trilogy at any rate.

If Experiment House gets changed into a Day School instead of a boarding school, I will not be pleased. Much of the value of the bullies is that their victims can't talk about it to parents at home each night. It's also part of the culture of English schools for that time and that social class.

So it doesn't seem logical for Eustace to be AT school right now - and therefore it's most likely that it's summer holidays (just as in LWW). So a social visit from the Poles to the Scrubbs, with daughter in tow, is acceptable. Eustace doesn't even need to talk to Jill, just sit silently in the corner while the parents chat. He could say a couple of polite things to her, such as "See you at school"...

I agree that it would be a shame to send Eustace to a day school. I can see Edmund and Lucy maybe having to do so, up until the school holidays, but not necessarily attending Experiment House afterwards. I can also see Eustace returning to Experiment House as a boarder after the school holidays, and I agree about the victims not being able to talk about being bullied at school to parents at home even maybe at the weekend, that being the culture of English middle class parents of the time.

That doesn't mean that Experiment House where Eustace Clarence Scrubb, at any rate, put so much store in having better marks than everyone else, wouldn't be the sort of boarding school that set lots of homework over the holidays, for struggling students to forget to do. ;) Whether Eustace and Jill were expected to be friendly or not, or whatever the circumstances, undone summer holiday homework makes the most likely reason for her visit, in my humble opinion. :D

I loved it. Upon thinking about it a little more, it doesn't make a whole ton of sense, considering they didn't like each other at the beginning of SC. But I think they could still make it work wonderfully if they chose to do so.

It was a nice addition I think. It can be changed a bit for SC. I wouldn't mind it so much, it could be that he wasn't mean to her but to others. So she can call him on that, bullying others, and then he can explain the change anyway.

I think It was cool for those who have read the books. Other people probably wouldn't have a clue who Jill Pole was though :D

Let me pull the direct quote from the book:

"Oh, go away and mind your own business," she said. "Nobody asked you to come barging in, did they? And you're a nice person to start telling us what we all ought to do, aren't you? I suppose you mean we ought to spend all our time sucking up to Them , and currying favour, and dancing attendance on Them like you do."
"Oh, Lor!" said the boy, sitting down on the grassy bank at the edge of the shrubbery and very quickly getting up again because the grass was soaking wet. His name unfortunately was Eustace Scrubb, but he wasn't a bad sort.
"Pole!" he said. "Is that fair? Have I been doing anything of the sort this term? Didn't I stand up to Carter about the rabbit? And didn't I keep the secret about Spivvins- under torture too? And didn't I-"
"I d-don't now and I don't care," sobbed Jill.
Scrubb saw that she wasn't quite herself yet and very sensibly offered her a peppermint. He had one too. Presently Jill began to see things in a clearer light.
"I'm Sorry, Scrubb," she said presently. "I wasn't fair. You have done all that- this term."
Then wash out last term if you can," said Eustace. "I was a different chap then. I was- gosh! What a little tick I was."

That being read, I think we can safely say that Eustace didn't directly bully Jill, but she didn't hold him in the highest regards. However, I don't think the change is irreconcilable and there are many ways to work it out.

But here is the thing- It's not in the book. The ending of Voyage of the Dawn Treader is supposed to come with this sense of awe, which couldn't be accomplished because the whole movie lacked a relationship with Aslan. If you remember the closing lines in the book are, "Then all in one moment there was a rending of the blue wall (like a curtain being torn) and a terrible white light from beyond the sky, and the feel of Aslan's mane and a Lion's kiss on their foreheads and then- the back bedroom in Aunt Alberta's home in Cambridge." Lucy is the only one who experienced the Lion's mane because the guys didn't even touch Him! Nice to know that Aslan changed you Eustace- great to know you have a relationship with him after he died for you, Edmund. :|

I just think the whole thing could have wrapped up much differently.

Umm...Edmund bowed to Him and was very reverent towards with Him and wept. Eustace was the one who said His name when he first showed up and asked if he will come back. It's not like they completely ignored Him. Edmund cried alot and seemed up set at not being able to go back. Eustace looked hopeful. Please give them credit.

I thought the name drop was an excellent add in! I squealed. Its a little hint to the audience that she is important in the next film. :p Well, not really but it helps when tying all the films together which seems to be something Apted is worried about since the Pevensie's are mostly gone until HHB and LB.

......However it's very important that Jill and Eustace are not friends at the end of the Silver Chair. Eustace used to bully her, and I liked seeing the change of him and I found their growing friendship was one of the best things about the book.

I agree with this. When I heard that today while watching the end of the film I really really didn't like the name-drop because of Josh's point made above. The whole appeal of Silver Chair with Eustace and Jill is that they get to be friends (with some bickering) during the story, they don't start out friends, there's stuff about each that they find out during the story as they go through each conflict.

My worst Hollywood fear is that they'll try to do something something I would absolutely hate.

On more thought.... if this was only a hint of SC possibly being made that's fine, but if they were to actually start off SC with them already being friends I'd have a huge problem with it.

I thought it was random and pointless. A nod to the book fans, but no real reason for it. Honestly, Alberta could have said anything at that point in the story, why did they choose to have her mention Jill? It just doesn't make sense to me. I can see the logic in supposing that the Poles and Scrubbs mixed socially (after all, they sent their children to the same school), but if all of the Poles came over for a visit why would Alberta mention Jill specifically? The potential ramifications of this could be disastrous for Jill and Eustace's relationship in SC.

It was alright. It seemed a bit forced and akward though, maybe if she had just said "Jill" it would sound more natural.
