[Closed] Incredibly Bizarre Apted Quote....

wait, there's another book Lewis didn't write about an underground army of witches.....?
I so want to read this book! I wonder if the CS Lewis foundation will print it when the movie comes out!? :D

No, there is no such book. Apted is saying they're going to show (and expand) things that Lewis only mentioned.

Lewis only mentioned Caspian getting married, and we only see the end of the Lady of the Green Kirtle building her army in SC. Apted seems to be saying they're going to show those things.

"The book CS Lewis didnt write." Well...that's one way to say "we're making stuff up."

I think Apted might have been really confused when he said this because it does not make sense.

It is totally uncinematic and would just drag down the story,

I vote he was up past his bedtime. :)

That's for sure! If the stuff they make up works well in the movies and parallels well with the book, I'll be ok with it. But if they squeeze in crazy details, I can't really say I'm feeling too good about this! :((

And "witches?" Movie makers, please don't tell me you've actually considered placing the WW in SC, or even worse, making her LotGk! If this idea goes any farther, I can't say I'll be the same optimistic fan! [-( :(

Okay, here's a question.

If after watching the movie, and the majority are upset with the way it was adapted, is there anyway that we could write a letter to the Walden Media, sharing with them our deep concern for future adaptions? For example sharing with them what it is that makes the books special to us, and why we do not want the White Witch in the Silver Chair?

It's official. I hate to say this. I really do. But I will not go see this film. I'm sorry.

"Uncinematic"? Please.

I really wanted this to work out. I trusted Apted. I trusted Fox. And I feel I was betrayed. This is my favorite book in the series and I will not pay to support a botched adaptation.

It is completely ruined for me.

but isn't that a good thing? if lewis said something and they are putting it in the movie.....
I understand if you don't like this, but I think, personally, that this is good news! only time will tell! I can't wait to see this move! :D

What if people who's views you respect watch it and say they liked it, and that it wasn't as far from the heart of the book as we were lead to believe?

It's clear now that this movie is not an adaptation. It's an Aptedation.

I agree with Libby, I'd actually wouldn't mind if they did that at least as long as they stuck to the stuff Lewis did mention, (ie. the marriage, much like the air raids in LWW)

The part that's bugging me is this: "But it enabled us to find a stronger reason for the journey, since there is no real reason for the journey as it stands.”

Ok I would seriously reword that part if you didn't mean it in that context, and if you did... x_x :-t ~x( [-x :-l :-w :-ss #-o =(( 8-} [-( 8-| :(( :-s X( :-o :-

Most people who see it won't be huge fans of the books, though it's possible most who see it will have read it (still I doubt even that). The way most people will communicate that they don't like it is for the film to fail financially, and at that point, it will hurt the chances of another film being made.

Lewis has an unfinished book between VDT and SC? I'm curious what Douglas Gresham has to say about that.

The thing is, i don't really get why he would choose to say such a thing. Regardless of their actual logic and reasoning in adapting specific elements of VDT from book to film, this is a promotional interview, he could choose to say absolutely whatever he likes. Lets face it, no director ever says "we did this to appeal to the lowest common denominator of cinema movie goers" even when its blatantly obvious that they did, they always give a more artistically credible spin on it instead. So why would Apted in a promotiontal interview for the movie choose to say something so utterly ridiculous about the basis for their adaptation being an imaginary book between VDT and SC that they made up themselves?

He could just as easily have said about how they found the episodic structure a challenge, and so looked closely for the themes and ideas such as temptation and greed that are present within each and built upon them to create a single coherent narrative based around the plot element of the Dark Island from the book as a central focus for exploring these themes - or words to that effect. It would of been equally as true as anything else he could of said of the movie, and would perhaps of garnered some good-will and keen buzz amongst the fan community. None of us expect a 100% word-for-word adaptation, we all appreciate how difficult it can be to adapt the stories into movies, there is no shame in that, but we at least like to know they tried - That they really got to the heart of what the story was about and tried to bring that out in the finished product. That in order to overcome the difficulties of adaptation they dug to the root of what the story was about and started working from there. Prince Caspian for all its faults and changes at least got what the book was about.

So for Michael Apted to come up with such an utterly ridiculous justification for the logic behind their adaptation, when a more noble and respectable answer was at hand, just defies belief. I can only hope that this is one sensationalist answer taken out-of-context from the larger interview, and that the rest of the interview will in fact reveal that Michael Apted and everyone else involved in the production, did in fact get what the heart and soul of the story was all about.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my reaction. Bizarre indeed...........I also noticed that there appear to be several typos. Perhaps the actual article will shed a little light on this. Perhaps.

No reason for the voyage as it stands????????? *headdesk*

The way most people will communicate that they don't like it is for the film to fail financially, and at that point, it will hurt the chances of another film being made.

That would be fine with me. At this point I see no reason to finish the series.

We can't win either way. If we don't see it the filmmakers will just think Narnia doesn't have appeal nowadays, and if it does do well they'll think that people don't mind the changes.

I really feel like the majority of people here could make a much better film (or at least screenplay) for the Narnia books, then most of the those who are working on this film.

Maybe we should write a script for The Silver Chair, and submit it to Walden Media as the script they better use, or else... X(

Wow. What more can I say, except for that I somehow hope that it's a quote taken out of context? Maybe because the quote is filled with grammatical errors, it is a clue that something fishy is happening. Does what Mr. Apted said here (or, is said to have said) actually go against anything else he's said earlier? Perhaps that is grasping at straws, I feel it is. I am disappointed yes, but perhaps still foolishly trying to believe something (ie: we get a good, faithful adaptation) that is not going to happen, or does not look like it will happen at this present moment.

I am, though, still planning on seeing the movie in theatres. At this point I think I shall always love the book over the movie, but I'll still want to see the film version.

Kind folks of old, you come again no more.
