If Aslan is changed to a female lion in Netflix's upcoming Narnia movie, how would this change impact your desire to see the film?

In the replies, feel free to elaborate on your choice, or explain how other scenarios (e.g. a male Aslan with a female voice actress) might alter your decision.

If you think that you will need to see the movie for your job or with family, vote according to your personal wishes, not obligations.

Honestly, this will have zero impact on whether I see the film in theatres or not.

Even if the film is a catastrophic trainwreck, I will still be seeing the film in theatres on Day 1 so that I can discuss the aforementioned trainwreck with other Narniawebbers on these forums. 😏

I will not spend my money on it if it's even a female voiced for what should be a male character. I don't want to support anything that far off base from the original story and the Chronicles as a whole. I'm honestly even skeptical about watching it with a third child actor in there. All of it hints at major story rewrites that could jeopardize the themes and meaning written by Lewis.

I'd still see it, but I doubt it could ever be a really great adaptation. I know that sounds overdramatic when it's just one thing about one character, but it just seems like such a pointless and (for fans) distracting change. As I've said before, even if everything else is wonderful, Aslan being a lioness would be like an annoying beeping noise in the background. EDIT: The most for which I could hope would be a good guilty pleasure.

I voted "little to no effect" for much the same reason as @icarus. Even if the movie turns out to be so completely off the mark that I feel like jumping up and down and screaming at the screen in frustration (which I wouldn't actually do in a cinema, don't worry), I cannot fairly criticise it if I haven't actually seen it.

It's the same deal for me as with the previous film adaptations of Narnia. I went to see the Walden film of LWW 20 years ago, and I was bitterly disappointed by it. But I've seen it, so I'm able to explain exactly what I thought was wrong with it (and the things I felt it did well, too). I've never seen the two sequels — precisely because the first film put me off — so I avoid making any comments on those.

I can understand why some fans would decide not to give their money to a company that has (possibly) produced a Narnia adaptation that strays so far from Lewis's intentions — especially with regard to Aslan — that it's basically a desecration. In a way, I'd also rather not spend my money on it either. But I do genuinely want to see what they've done with it before I pass judgment, and unfortunately I don't think I have any close friends with a Netflix subscription (that's the only way I could get out of paying to see it myself — watching it on Netflix at someone else's place Giggle ). So I think I'll just have to fork out for an IMAX ticket the one time and be done with it.

"Now you are a lioness," said Aslan. "And now all Narnia will be renewed."

I haven’t decided yet whether I’m going to see it.  If it is a really poor adaptation I am reluctant to support it with my money. I have some curiosity to see what it will be like, but I am not entirely sure if it will be worth paying for the ticket. It would be nice to have some reviews and possibly a trailer to show what the movie is like.

While I echo the sentiment of others that there’s a fair chance I may still watch it just so that I know exactly what I’m talking about, I had to say much less likely to watch it. My immediate feeling when this rumor came out was utter dread and horror, and while I’ve had time to calm down and look at things from other angles and try to find alternatives to keep me somewhat optimistic, at the end of the day if things really do go forward the way it looks on the face of it, that’s one of the biggest turn-offs you could possibly curse this adaptation with. I said elsewhere that I think the only things that could possibly be worse would be to paint Aslan as some sort of unfair or even cruel figure with Susan as a victim of the patriarchy, or to make the whole thing an irreverent comedy in the style of something like Taika Waititi’s Thor movies or similar recent MCU projects more focused on one-liners and innuendo than story. Barring those that I think are thankfully extremely unlikely to ever happen in any future adaptation, the current real possibility of Aslan being female is the worst change you could make, and certainly the most offensive and blasphemous to Christian fans. It would feel like dressing up my God in a different skin because they didn’t like Him as He really is and that’s just not something I feel comfortable supporting. Rather than watching it myself I would likely wait to see the full ‘debriefing’ from those who did choose to take one for the team so they could lay out exactly what went down and I can decide how I feel about it once the facts are in front of me. I’ve done that with other things that I couldn’t bring myself to watch and I’m perfectly willing to do so again. If it turns out to be as bad as it sounds, I don’t know if I could do it.

No matter what, I'm absolutely going to see Greta Gerwig’s Narnia. My first introduction to C.S. Lewis’s world wasn’t even through the books, it was the old BBC television series. It wasn’t the most high-budget or polished adaptation, but something about it completely captured my imagination. It made me fall in love with the story and eventually led me to read the books themselves. That experience taught me early on that adaptations don’t have to be perfect mirrors of the source material to be meaningful or transformative.

Every version brings something different to the table, and that’s part of what I find so exciting about them. I’ve always believed that adaptations are interpretations; reflections of both the original work and the person telling the story. Greta Gerwig is a filmmaker I trust to bring thoughtfulness, heart, and a unique perspective to anything she touches. Even if her Narnia isn’t exactly what I might have pictured, I know it will be worth seeing, worth thinking about, and worth experiencing on its own terms.

I will probably watch on Netflix either way, but I answered much less likely because while there is a fair chance I would see it in the theater if it is a faithful adaptation, there is little to no chance I'll see it in the theater if they make Aslan female.

I just can't envision myself not seeing a new Narnia movie at least once, so I voted for "little/no effect on my choice to see the movie".

"Tollers, there is too little of what we really like in stories. I am afraid we shall have to try and write some ourselves." - C.S. Lewis

I would watch the movie to see exactly what has been made of Magician's Nephew. Having noted people's upset at the mere idea of a Mrs Aslan, I'd still want to review the movie anyway, especially as there is still a way to go until Thanksgiving in 2026. I've lived a long time to see this movie, but if another, later, version was made, those who have seen Greta Gerwig's production will still have something to compare against any new version, when neither BBC nor Walden attempted MN.

Does anyone know when (or if) we might get to listen to soundtrack samples? Like I said, I'll see the movie eventually in any case but if I hear part of Aslan's song and it sounds really great, that'll make me in more of a hurry to see it. And if they do cast Meryl Streep or another actress as Aslan, the song sounding great could go some ways towards reconciling me to that.

A few years ago, I found that every time I'd watch something in the hopes of being entertained, I'd finish whatever it was that I was watching feeling angry or upset or even insulted. And so I made the decision that I'd had enough of Hollywood, filmmakers, and streamed content, and I was no longer going to financially support any kind of media unless it had glowing reviews from friends and family that I trusted.

At this point in time in my life I rarely watch anything. Maybe a new-to-me movie every three to six months? TV series almost never. The only streaming service I have right now is Amazon and that's only because I want their free shipping.

So if Aslan is made to be female in this movie, I have very strong objections to that, and I will not support this movie financially. Because to me (and this is my own personal conviction), if I talk about how opposed I am to a movie (or whatever), but still go pay to see it, my words mean nothing. The people that make this product get their $$$ from me, so why on earth should they produce anything else?

I never say never. It is possible that this movie comes out and everyone on here just starts gushing about how Ms. Gerwig made a female Aslan work and totally honored all of Lewis's convictions and ideals and then maybe, just MAYBE, I might consider watching it. But I find that very unlikely.

It will not prevent me from watching it on Netflix, but, since I would have to drive a distance to see the movie in IMAX, I am not sure I will make the drive if I am going to be that upset in theaters. If I am not going to watch it in theaters, it will only be two weeks till I can see it on Netflix. But, frankly, if she is just voicing a male Aslan, I will most definitely go and see it. Only if the Lion is a Lioness, will I wait the two weeks before seeing it on Netflix. And I for one do not care about spoilers and so I would still be on the forums even if I was waiting the two weeks till Netflix release.
