[Closed] Hopes for no Silver Chair

The reason I think The Silver Chair might still be a good movie is the fact that the other three movies are so different from each other. Think about how different Prince Caspian was from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. And how The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was different from both of them. Film-makers read reviews. I think they can still turn this series around.

I feel I should warn you that no matter how hard you try, no matter what you do, as a filmmaker adapting from source material, you will never please everyone. You will always have people pointing fingers and saying, "That director ruined my favorite story." There will always be people who don't like your way of interpreting what happened. All you can do is whatever you think is best.

Too true I agree on you whole-heartedly on this statement. It really isn't my intention to wish bad upon the narnia films. I have watched them and there are some things I truly love with them and other things I just don't understand. I really hope that narnia can continue and hope for the other books to be made into films, sometimes its just hard to see how narnia is being adapted at times. I'm sure that Douglas Gresham is taking steps to ensure that the Narnia films are properly taken care of. I have listened to the radio drama theatre adaption of narnia and it took my breath away. Gresham was also involved in this production. At times I think the filmmakers could extend the Narnia films an extra hour. Sure it's a little more to sit through, but maybe it could really help storywise, since in some people's opinioin the films feel to quick and choppy. No matter how you cut it however, you still can't please everyone. Every person is a critic and there will always be people who just accept or won't accept aspects of a film. :|

I don't want to see another Narnia film right now. But if it is green-lit and they get rid of Apted....I'll remain open-minded.

Andrew Adamson made mistakes of course, but I always sensed a passion for the material. He really seemed to care. Say what you want about Adamson...but I think it's clear that he cared.

Apted, on the other hand, comes across and totally apathetic about the story and characters. VDT seemed like it was made with the efficiently of a soap opera. Apted was there to get things done as quickly and cheaply as possible, and that is about it.

Moreover, I really get the feeling from interviews that Apted doesn't like the book. He always talks about the book like it's a handicap for the film.

Looking at the list of films that Apted has made, VDT is a rather unusual directorial choice for him. Not the sort of thing he typically makes. Sometimes directors take on genre films simply for the paycheck. After all, genre films are where the money is. No one is ever going to hit 700 million off of a semi-biographical film about distant events in history. It would certainly explain the lackluster storytelling and the fact that his previous genre film, his entry in the Bond franchise, is also regarded widely as a poor entry in the franchise. He just doesn't like these kind of movies, but makes them because they pay the bills. Actors do the same thing all the time.

Here I can agree with you. I do NOT want Apted back for the next installment. If he's back I will see it of course, but I really don't want it to be him. Adamson made mistakes, primarily in PC, but he did care that was clear.

I'd choose Adamson over Apted any day. Apted isnt a bad director for some movies, but in the case of Narnia he is terrible.

Still I want someone new. Someone great. I also want new scriptwriters. And a larger budget. I know they havent grossed much with VotDT but if Silver Chair is going to be the last film in the series I want them to go out with a bang.

I agree...Andrew Adamson was awesome! I think he was really interested in making a good film and getting the story right...and he just didn't manage to do it with PC (In some opinions)
Ithink he should have directed VDT because he clearly cared about the story and characters and cast, and he was great. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy VDT, but I think that the first 2 narnias had more effectionate preperation.

As far as Silver chair goes...I realy want to see it made. I can see why some people are saying no but I think that SC would make a great film...perhaps even the best yet if they took enough time to make it perfect! The characters and the story are good and now they have a central character that is played by a much loved actor (Thanks to his performance in VDT)
Even if it wont be 'the best' I'm sure it'll make a great film like VDT was. Sure it wasn't strictly Narnia but it was an enjoyable watch <3

Meh. I have mixed feelings about this. I've found the Narnia movies more of a disappointment then a success, and I'm honestly pretty fed up with the whole thing. They wouldn't need to change the plot much in Silver Chair, as the book has enough adventure on its own, but then it wasn't necessary to add so many things to VotD either. So, I don't know. I'm more leaning towards it not being made.

Would the starter of this thread be happy to hear that there may indeed be no Silver Chair?

According to April 25th's online Guardian.UK edition this article said:

Yet while the makers of the Back to the Future, Evil Dead and Red Curtain trilogies knew when to stop, the third picture has frequently proved a step too far, most notably in the case of Fritz Lang's Dr Mabuse and Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather trines. Walden Media recently announced plans to reduce the seven instalments of Narnia to five, by skipping The Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy. But such contractions are rare and the trilogy looks set to become a major victim of Hollywood's continuing bout of sequelitis.

When did Walden/Fox announce these plans anyway?

What?? :-o I can see them skipping HHB- yes you'll lose the history of Shata and Aravis among others that would have appeared in LB, but that doesn't matter much for the franchise as a whole. Also, losing the fun of seeing Narnia in its "Golden Years" and revisiting the Pevensies is a bummer, but again, it works. But skipping SC- are they not putting Jill in LB or is the line "Jill Pole is here to visit" going to be all we see of Jill until LB? Are they going to mesh parts of SC in the beginning of LB to fit Jill in?

This seems rather crazy and confusing...where did you get this, waggerwolf? i hope it's not true... :-s Please, please don't drop SC!!

Because I DO want SC to be made. :D

Is that a usually accurate site? I cannot believe that! I want ALL the books to be made, and the practically VOWED they would. To skip would be yet another sign of fearing to take risks, and just pure laziness! Please, if you're not willing to go on with all 7 of the books, why bother going ahead then?! X(

I'm sorry, I'm just really upset about this. I'm hoping this is wrong, but I no longer know what to believe from Walden. They pretty much promised they'd do them all, though... Oh well, if this is true, at least we won't have to worry about them messing up on SC and HHB, but either way, this just shows they have no love for making all of the books film anymore. :(

yeah,, unless Narniaweb posts that, I won't believe it. Can't believe every site. Of course if Fox or Walden posted it on their sites, I'd believe it too.

The Guardian article was at this address: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2011/apr/25/film-trilogy-top-ten. It was called Death of the Trilogy.

I don't believe it either. The Guardian is probably jumping to conclusions/making assumptions based on MN being highly buzzed as next in production. I won't believe anything until I see it officially announced from Walden/Fox.
