As long as the kiss is after the spell on three men is gone I am good with it. Otherwise, I have a problem with seeing this in the movie.

^^ agreed!

I am no longer panicking! I feel greatly relieved that the bit at the end with Aslan talking to the Pevensies is intact.....so I am not worried anymore.

I have to admit that I dont consider myself a book purist - referenced by the fact that I liked PC more than LWW. I was happy that the 'romp' was left off because I felt that it just wouldnt work well on screen. The only change that bothered me was the infamous kiss - ugh! I am excited for the upcoming VDT movie and I am actually excited about the 'seven swords of the seven lords' addition to see how that turns out..... there.... I said it. Let the tomatoes start flying.

^^ I am not a Narnia book purist either!
I am wondering what the point is about the seven swords.....I hope the plot doesn't go too far.....

Seven swords? Fascinating! Would one of them happen to be a vorpal blade and go snicker-snack?

but that doesn't have anything to do with time, the Narnia and Harry Potter series are both timeless. i've seen many, many, many HP fans who are just as attached to HP as we are to Narnia (myself included). i think actually that HP fans are much more devoted than most Narnia fans because see what they've gone through, the book series ended two years ago, Narnia ended FIFTY-two years ago, so we didn't have to go through the sadness of seeing our series end, it already ended. what's more we're only on the third movie, they're on 7/8, i think that HP fans might be more emotionally attached than we are.

The main difference between HP films and Narnia being filmed is that JK Rowling, herself, has been around to give her opinion. And since she was around and still writing the books, the filmmakers, producers etc, had to listen to whatever she said. I didn't like the third Harry Potter movie so much because IMHO it left out important information that detracted from the movie interpretation, whilst adding other things that were a bit unnecessary, like shrunken heads. But JKR okayed it, so there you go. When Alfonso Cuaron wanted to put in a cemetery at the school, JKR said no, that he can't have a cemetery whatever he wanted, and so it had to go.

So far as I can see there is little to worry about this time around with VDT, even though C.S.Lewis isn't around to give his opinion. So long as there aren't any song and dance routines put into any Narnia movie, even in Underland, I'll be happy. =))

Personally, I don't even like the word "adaptation". To adapt something is to change it. I prefer the term "translation". To translate something is to tell it using different words. This is what I expect from book-to-movie-"adaptations": to see the story told on the screen that I read in the book. I dissect all adaptations of books I have read. I ask: Why did they do that? If I can find a logical answer to my question then I'm fine with it. Tom Bombadil was left out of LotR because of time--this makes sense. The Suspian romance was added because "Susan is older and Caspian is cute"--this does not make sense.
I like puzzles, and book-to-movie-adaptations(translations) are puzzles. In the end, the movie will be what it will be, but if what is omitted or what is added does not make sense I won't like it.

I completely agree with this. I will like certain changes if it is for the best and it makes since. And how daughter of the King explained the Suspian part is a great example of a bad adapt. What was really the whole purpose to this change towards the story? Nada. Draging in swooning fangirls to make the movie better.

and I don't see why they were targeting a teen audience in the first place. sure, the movie was violent and full of battles, but to throw in romance? I don't see why. isn't the adventure plot enough to get teens to see it? (further study req'd. lol)

In our love for the material and subsequent portrayal on film, we should push those at the helm to keep it as close as humanly possible, realizing that something short of perfect will be attained. All Narnia fans share a common dream of the heart, but what that looks like varies from person to person. The challenge is, none of us can perfectly explain or portray that thing which so stirs our soul, not even "Jack" himself was able to completely and entirely put his vision on paper. This is the human condition, but we continue, and rightfully so, to dream and bring expression to those dreams. This topic brought to mind some thoughts from C.S. Lewis...

Are not all lifelong friendships born at the moment when at last you meet another human being who has some inkling (but faint and uncertain even in the best) of that something which you were born desiring, and which, beneath the flux of other desires and in all the momentary silences between the louder passions, night and day, year by year, from childhood to old age, you are looking for, watching for, listening for? You have never had it. All the things that have ever deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of it—tantalising glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear. But if it should really become manifest—if there ever came an echo that did not die away but swelled into the sound itself—you would know it. Beyond all possibility of doubt you would say 'Here at last is the thing I was made for.' We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want, the thing we desired before we met our wives or made our friends or chose our work, and which we shall still desire on our deathbeds, when the mind no longer knows wife or friend or work. While we are, this is. If we lose this, we lose all.

—from The Problem of Pain

Lost in the woods and weary he looked into the night sky and a voice spoke to him, "As long as the moon shines, I will be with you. The day the moon no longer shines, you will be with Me."

My approach to movies being made from book (Narnia included) was love the book for the book and the movie for the movie. Sometimes I do get sad when they change things in the movies perhaps because I so liked something in the book and was disapointed that it wasn't in the movie. I loved the was LWW was made in movie format and almost loved PC (the only thing that annoyed me was the Suspian thing)

Thank you for starting this topic! :) I was a book purist when LWW came out. Then PC came along and the directors changed everything up and added their own elements to it...but I still ended up liking the movie more than LWW. The movie retained themes that were important to me. Would I have liked them to have stayed more true to the book? Of course! But I realized that I spent all that time worrying over random little details that didn't matter so much to me when I saw the actual movie. I've accepted the fact that the directors will put in things I don't like in the movie, but that shouldn't stop me from enjoying the movie if the spirit of the book is still there.

All Narnia fans share a common dream of the heart, but what that looks like varies from person to person. The challenge is, none of us can perfectly explain or portray that thing which so stirs our soul, not even "Jack" himself was able to completely and entirely put his vision on paper.

So true. Everyone has their own interpretation of the Narnia series. Each book speaks to people in different ways. So it is challenging to turn those books into a movie without making some people upset. Since PC, I've learned to be more open to changes. If it means adding things in, so be it! (I feel like a traitor saying that here. :D). I need to not worry about things so much and just enjoy the new info that keeps trickling in. Otherwise, it can ruin the fun of being a fan.

I am not opposed to changes. I am, however, opposed to anything that may detract from the ability of the film to mirror (well, maybe not mirror, but get close to mirroring) the book. This generally includes major and minor changes. The MLG, I think, is a good idea as long as she keeps her place and character and doesn't take over Lucy. Like, has anyone thought that this little girl might go into the Magician's House instead of Lucy? That would be overstepping. For me, the book people, places, ideas, plot lines, and events always take precedence over anything that someone wishes to add. And, I read somewhere that production was considering adding a scene where Caspian, Edmund, Lucy, Eustace, and Reep fight Pug and his men. I have always thought that if VotDT needed one more scene, that would be the scene. Now, obviously that's my opinion. And I do not like the idea of a witch or a preview of the LotGK- because then Eustace would already know her and be more on his guard. There are already two witches in CoN and VotDT is, in my opinion, better off without one. It's exciting enough.

That's true. I mean, they are two different things: a book and a movie. They can each have their pros and cons.
