but that doesn't have anything to do with time, the Narnia and Harry Potter series are both timeless. i've seen many, many, many HP fans who are just as attached to HP as we are to Narnia (myself included). i think actually that HP fans are much more devoted than most Narnia fans because see what they've gone through, the book series ended two years ago, Narnia ended FIFTY-two years ago, so we didn't have to go through the sadness of seeing our series end, it already ended. what's more we're only on the third movie, they're on 7/8, i think that HP fans might be more emotionally attached than we are.

I'm not certain how that fits. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. I guess I'm not sure how that follows. Even if Narnia ended a longer time ago than Harry Potter, readers still have to read "The Last Battle." The ending of any series is just as sad to the reader no matter how long ago the books were written or if they were written recently. I think the feeling of, "I just read the last book and no more have been written" (in relation to Narnia) is really the same thing as "JK Rowling is writing the last book." If you get what I'm saying.

This thread has one of the best titles I've ever seen. =))

Obviously as die-hard fans of the book, the initial reason we are excited about a movie adaptation at all is the thrill of seeing the things on the page come to life. So whenever we hear that some things in the page won't be coming to life, we're disappointed. And that disappointment leads to fear that more things we haven't yet heard about won't be coming to life. And that fear leads to anger. And anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering... as we agonize over what it could have been.

As fans, we should understand that they are making an adaptation of the book. The book is great, so the goal should be to make a film that is just as great. But often times, things that are great on the page are not great on the screen. So sometimes changes have to be made in order to capture what makes it great in the book. In other words, sometimes you have to make changes in the interest of being faithful to the book.

That certainly does NOT justify all changes. Both LWW and PC made changes that I felt were completely inconsistent with the most fundamental themes of the book (as well as changes that I loved, and thought really captured and emphasized the themes of the book). Also as fans, we should hold the filmmakers accountable. If something is making you nervous, say so. And say why.

not to be a suck-up or a fanboy gPuddle but i'm seeming to agree with you a lot lately and glad you liked the title :D
@Lady Galadrial, yeah i see that, thats what i felt about Narnia and Harry Potter when i finished them for the first time. But you should look in on the HP fandom, they are truly crazy and devoted, and one shouldn't discredit them

i've been thinking lately, we narnia fans go BESERK whenever there is the mention of a change to the books for the movie. i mean like why does it matter so much? i am just as guilty of this as the next guy, but why did i have to get so up in arms? i'm gonna go all Harry Potter on everyone (sorry :-s ) but did the HP fans freak out when they heard about the new scene not written by J.K. Rowling being added to the Half-Blood Prince movie? not really...why do we care so much if there is a mysterious little girl? why do we care if seven islands are CONSOLIDATED into five? why can't we let it rest and wait? the only way that i am going to make it until Dec. 10 is by not freaking out. give me your thoughts...

I think for the most part, as long as the changes are seen to work with the themes or seem a strong addition, then we remain accepting... and curious... maybe even excited. :-P

I've talked to and know of avid Harry Potter fans who can chat for hours on end about the things they like and dislike in the films, which leads me to think there are Potter fans who may have gone beserk over unexpected scenes/changes. I'm sure there were.

But if there is a difference in how Narnian fans react, it may stem from the fact that our books are significantly shorter and less detailed than the Potter ones! I think there is a little bit more room for interpretation in the Narnia series and that alone can be a little terrifying.

I find that when you are very disappointed with a movie, you tend to leave the fansite because you don't want to discuss it anymore. That's the way it worked here on NarniaWeb, I'm sure it's the same for Harry Potter fansites. The ones that stay are the ones that didn't mind the changes so much.

True...or it could cause a jump in memberships because people want to make sure it doesn't happen again and put in their thoughts, hoping for a different outcome. ;)

Especially with different directors. Andrew had his own view, and now we must wait and see what Michael has in store for us. Because of their known personality differences, this is difficult. It's fine to be "different"...let's just hope the movies have the good kind of "different."

I guess I am going to explain why I am a Narnia book Purist. Besides the fact I believe we are born with this impairment, being a purist of certain books or not, I believe there is more to it than this. For me little things create a connect for me between the books and movies. I mean I would love for the big things to be correct to the book, but I enjoyed sometimes the little things so much and I feel a loss of connection if they aren't there. Of course while I wanted the purple sail I wanted the Aslan scene at the end of Dawn Treader perfect and I wanted the cool scene between Edmund and Eustace. In fact, sometimes it is hard to determine whether certain things are big or little, sometimes they are really big to me but don't matter to any one else. In PC, I was involved in a discussion about whether Narnia fans would allow Edmund's torch to be called a flashlight in the movie. I really would have done something to somebody if they had called the torch a flashlight in the movie. (Probably rant for ages.) In LWW, I was disappointed when they didn't use old English at the very end of the movie when they were kings and queens. To me although it may seem like a small thing to some it was huge to me. The Horse and His Boy, the first book I read of the Narnia series, is my third favorite book because of the funny scenes they had in the book. To me Rabadash and his father's talk was funny because they addressed each other not like father and son but like peasant addressing monarch. Of course, I also thought the details of Aravis and Shasta getting married so they could get into fights and make up more conveniently. I want to feel that the book is some how connected with the movie. So, that is why I am a Narnia book purist and I wanted a purple sail.

Meh, I can live with a non-purple sail. I survived Lucy not being blonde and the White Witch being blonde. Now that hideous excuse for a Dawn Treader, that bothers me. :P As a book purist, what I'm worried about is seeing the actual book on screen and not something the director randomly dreams up that doesn't work with the book material, like the idiotic Susaspian ship. That's not to say I dislike all added in scenes. I thought the Night Raid worked very well.
