To some extent, it does remind me of the way people are able to travel vast distances in Middle-Earth seemingly in a few days. Elrond, for instance, travels from Rivendell to the Rohirrim mustering camp apparently overnight, yet this is actually the journey of several months. Physically impossible for him to have made the journey given the film's timeline. Basically, film-makers get lazy or they think people won't notice. Unfortunately for them, we do.
Thoughts? Who else thinks Walden should fire their scriptwriters?? *raises both hands*
*stands up and raises hand* I second the motion.
This is indeed an example of A deus ex machina .
I don't think this is the only one either, I'm sure there are more but I'll think of them later.

Actually in the movie I don't think he's drowning. He says "I'm going back to England" and then it looks like he is attempting to dive underwater to find England again. The Telemarine stops him from diving though.
Know this is still slightly off-topic discussion about his swimming, but I think you're right about all of that. He's probably just a very poor swimmer at the beginning of the movie.

Well I'kll admit it...I didn't mind untill i read this!
I just assumed that Asland had 'teleported' Eustace to Ramandu's Island because he was too week after being a dragon (and injured at that), but now i think about it, why would he just randomly appear in the water like that? It doesn't make much sense, and as far as swimming goes, i'm not so sure he'd have made it! I mean yeas he did swim to the surface at the begining but he was struggling in the water and choked up about a quarter of the ocean when he got onto the deck! But this isn't really much of a problem for me because at the time I didn't notice...I was too busy cringing at "I'm a boy again!" (Shudder)
Narnia is childhood...
Seriously, just give the kid the orange. He needs his vitamin C!
To me the teleportation makes perfect sense! Was it not Aslan who teleported Eustace and Jill to Narnia from his own country before? Perhaps he did the same with Eustace here, just didn't show him fly to Ramandu's Island.
Long Live King Caspian & Queen Liliandil Forever!
Jill+Tirian! Let there be Jilrian!
I thought the teleportation from RI to DI was really weird. I'm like "Seriously? *Someone* should be trying to swim the Channel once the war is over". However, as I was reading this thread I had another thought. Now, I've only seen the movie once, two months ago, and so details escape me. But Eustace was fighting the Green Mist to get the sword on the table, right? It's possible that the Green Mist had him somewhat trapped, like the people in the boats, and that Eustace just barely managed to get the sword to the other swords before the Mist whisked him away. Then, when the Mist disappeared and the people in boats were revealed, Eustace was there with them, only he was on the other side of the boat because the Mist was dragging him to DI just as it was destroyed. Or something.
Hey, it's better than thinking Eustace is an Olympian swimmer or that it was just a bit of Aslan ex machina.

I didn't really mind the teleporting to much. The second one was kinda weird, though. I more had a problem with the whole scene after the green mist cleared. It's like the writers had only a minute to wrap up the rest of the story so they threw everyone together including Eustace. It wasn't horrible, and I've seen it done in other good movies. However, in this case, I felt they could have created a lot more emotion by spending more time on those scenes. Maybe have them start to look for Eustace. Dwell more on the fact that they think he might have died etc. Basically just another symptom of one of my major gripes with this film. TO SHORT!!

Gosh thats a great idea! Wow now I think about it that makes perfect sense and it completely solves the 'Teleporting to the water' problem! Yeah, the mist took everyone else, and it was kind of 'swarming' around him trying to stop him from putting the sword down, maybe he did it just in time? If you think of that in a script sense it would seem like a great idea, but maybe it just didn't translate onto screen very well!
Good thinking Lirenel!

I was thinking about this some more... ... and honestly, the teleporting really isn't that out of place. Aslan does all sorts of teleporting of the characters in the books (egs. intro to PC-Pevensies drawn out of train platform to Narnia; conclusion of SC-Eustace, Jill, Caspian, and Aslan back to Experiment House) so it isn't really that big of a deal in VDT except for the negative of it not developing emotional impact by drawing things out...
I was also thinking the Pevensies should have expressed a lot more worry and concern about what happened to Eustace! They barely blinked and there he was, just as quickly as he became Dragoni-fied, and then boom, they're already on the sea of lilies...
