[Closed] Eustace at the Closing

What does everyone hope/think will happen at the end when Eustace comes back to our world a changed boy? Do you think it will just end with them all coming back into the bedroom and nothing more, or do you think it will show Harold and Alberta's reaction to their changed son? And if they do show the parent's reaction, will it be a bad reaction like in the book, or do you think the director will change it for the movie and make them love their son even more? How do you think Eustace and the Pevensies will feel about Harold and Alberta's reaction? Do you think there will be any mention of The Experiment House or Jill Pole, etc.? Do you have any other thoughts?
Discuss! ;)

Even with a new director at the helm, i would still probably expect the before-Narnia and after-Narnia scenes to follow roughly the same format as they did in the first two films, partly due to the fact that this film is still based upon an initial first draft by LWW and PC screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley (significant parts of which we know made it through to the final shooting script) and they seemed to have a very particular way of doing things.

In the first two films, when the children leave the real world, the script leaves a small inconsequential plot thread left hanging. Upon their return to the real world at the end of the movie, this plot thread is then picked straight back up (presumably to subconsciously emphasise the idea that no time has passed in the real world) with a brief moment of humour, and the movie ends pretty sharpish - they haven't wasted any amount of time in either film with an excessive wind-down once the children have left Narnia.

In LWW, they left the real-world at the beginning having smashed a window and knocked over a suit of armour with a cricket ball. Upon their return to the real world at the end of the movie, the Professor humorously throws the Cricket Ball back to them and quips "Try me" in response to Peter's remark about him not believing where they were.

In PC, they leave the real-world at the beginning with Susan trying to avoid the attentions of the "Geeky Boy" on the train station platform ("pretend you're talking to me"). Upon their return to the real-world at the end of the movie, the Geeky Kid blithely asks "Aren't you coming Phyllis?", humorously recalling the earlier conversation at the news-stand.

So like i said, i would probably expect VDT to end in a similar way. It won't waste too much time showing what happened once they get back - there will probably just be a brief moment of humour recalling what had happened immediately preceding their trip into Narnia and that will be it. Perhaps given what we saw in the trailer, and a scene that was featured in the leaked script, it will be something to do with Uncle Harold and the Groceries, and/or some moment of humour to show how Eustace has changed.

Depending on how they are planning to integrate the Peter and Susan real-world cameos (such that we saw on the theatre standee) they could perhaps maybe work in a humorous "where have you been?" ending involving Peter/Susan in a similar manner to the ending of LWW, though like i said they almost certainly won't waste too much time in wrapping up the movie once they return to the real-world, so unless Peter and Susan are both going to be at the Scrubb's house, i can't see that happening.

I hope they have a little more than the book when they return the the bedroom! I don't know what I hope for yet, but I hope that they show Alberta and Harold!

I'm going with your "moment of humor" idea, hopefully involving Harold and Alberta. I'd love to see their shock at finding Eustace completely changed - a "who-are-you-and-what-have-you-done-with-my-son" kind of moment.

I also think it would be neat for someone to mention Experiment House and how Eustace will be going there again after the holidays, in order to tie VDT into SC. So far, all of the movies have ended with someone wondering when they will get back to Narnia. It'd be nice to continue the trend with Eustace wondering too.

I hope they do a series of montage scenes back in their world and in Narnia. I would love to see the looks on Eustace's parents as they see a huge change in their little boy and cut back to Narnia.

I don't know, I think it'd be better to just have Lucy, Ed, and Eustace in the end scene, and not his parents. I never thought of his parents as being all that great, or really 'there' for him. They seem to hardly notice, except for his mom just thinking he's become more "tiresome"... not very positive to his transformation lol.

How will they show the wedding with Ramandu's daughter and Caspian? In the book they just stated it. I wonder if they will leave that out of the film. I can't imagine them doing that, but i am not sure how that will work.

I honestly don't see how a Caspian and Lilliandil wedding could work out in this film unless they show it during the credits with at least a few months that went by. IDK it really depends on how they fix this. :)

IF there were new writers, I would say the conclusion might be expanded a bit to show how Harold and Alberta react to the new Eustace, but there aren't new writers. As icarus pointed out, there has been very little time after Narnia in either of the movies. I would like to see a tag scene that shows that Caspian and Lilliandil after they're married with Rilian as a baby or a toddler, but I don't think that's going to happen.

I know that we still have the same writers but the huge case scenerio is that there is a new director and whatever he wants, goes. Writers rewrite on movie sets all the time to please the directors wishes. I'm not too worried on that. ;)

The thing is that the wedding may be too good of a 'romantic' moment for them to leave out. They could just have Ramandu's daughter appear with Aslan in Aslan's country and Caspian could return with her or something. I guess it could be understood that they are together at this point and they wouldn't need to show the wedding.

Yes but I don't think the entire film is going to concentrate only on Caspian and Lilliandil a lot. It really depends on how big of of romance they have in this film in order to show a wedding scene. I guess I just want audiences who haven't read the chronicles and hardcore Suspians to get the fact that Caspian is over Susan. So i really want this crew for this film to focus on making Caspian and Lilliandil the most original romantic couple ever since Stardust, because that is what they are.

Just to point out, there are new writers - 3 of them to be precise - its just that there are still the old writers as well. Tony Nixon showed a shot of the front page of his shooting script from the set to fans on his official facebook page which credited the screenwriters as follows:

By Christopher Markus & Steve McFeeley
Revisions by Steven Knight, Richard LaGravenesse
Current Revisions by Michael Petroni

From what we've seen/learnt about the movie so far, there have been several significant changes since the first draft, but much of the same basic structure remains, hence why i suspect that the ending will follow pretty much the same format as the first two films. Though as DamselJillPole pointed out, even during filming there can be fairly significant rewrites on a daily basis, and things can change even further in the editing process.

One need only look at the ending of LWW - in the original draft by Anne Peacock, it had an extended ending which featured the party/dancing scene after the coronation, followed by a really nice transition from a young Lucy watching Aslan on the beach walking away from Cair Paravel, to an older Lucy looking over the same stretch of beach where his footprints had been. It also then had an extended lead-in to the hunting of the White Stag scene in the courtyard of Cair Paravel. By the time they came to shoot though, that had all been replaced by a rather abrupt cut straight to the White Stag hunt, and although they actually shot the dancing scene (it even made the trailer) it didn't make the final cut of the movie and it didnt even make the Extended Version DVD (which makes the extended edition all the more pointless)

I don't know about the wedding, but I really hope they'll put in a short Caspian/Lilliandil scene like decarus said. Maybe they could show Caspian returning to Ramandu's Island after the Pevensies leave?

Or maybe Caspian can ask Lilliandil to come back with him to Narnia?

^ I love that idea Silver the Wanderer

They could show Caspian suggest to Lilliandil to go back to Narnia with him. :D

As for Eustace, I want to see something with scaring his parents in his way of changing like hugging them and Alberta feeling faint. :p
