Well, if they're examining old documents, a flashlight, while still not good from a preservation standpoint, would be a much better idea to use than a candle. Candles carry the risk of fire, smoke damage, and inconsistent lighting fading the ink on the documents. Candles made out of animal fat may also attract pests.
Of course in my perfect archival world, any documents would be held in acid-free boxes in a room with a steady low humidity and low temperature, and Edmund, Lucy, and Caspian would all be wearing cotton gloves, but archival preservation was a bit in its infancy at the time...
