I felt sorry for him and angry at him during some scenes. Mostly sad for him. I think he was sort of having a character change before turning into a dragon but he still had that selfish quality in him.

Going back to the bit about wishing to see him meaner onscreen in the movie, I think that really would have been better because it would contrast with the 180 degree turnaround he does at the end like Josh said. Plus him grabbing the CGI Reep by the tail would have been a fun scene to watch (though they would have to add a disclaimer that no animals were injured in the filming of this movie).

I feel that I did really get annoyed with Eustace, but I never did actually hate him. Sometimes I really did feel sorry for him, but other times I thought "How could anyone in real life not be a little bit annoyed at this guy?" My family said that they didn't like him before he turned into a dragon. As for me, I'd say he could've been worse, but in the end, he definitely was a obnoxious brat (great going, Will!).
I definitely felt sorry for Eustace. I was more on his side for most of the film than I was on the other's side (Except for the beginning part, of course). It made Reep and the Pevensies seem almost mean at times.
His freaking out on arrival on board seemed like a natural reaction for someone who's used to our world and is suddenly thrown into that one. And immediately the Pevensies and the others start mocking him and wish they could throw him overboard.
Plus they didn't make the food and water rationing at all serious or dangerous, like it was in the book. So when they wouldn't let him have an orange, it seemed more like they were starving him, instead of him meanly stealing something during a shortage.
In the book, Eustace exasperated me (in a good way ). In the movie, I felt like giving him a hug.

My brother completely disliked Eustace. It really made him dislike the movie. Otherwise, the other negative things he pointed out were very very minor.
If Jill was coming to visit Eustace, he probably was not a complete and total antisocial recluse. And his parents do not seem to be abusive.
So it is not easy to feel sorry for him- until he turns into a dragon.
Eustace is actually an antisocial extrovert. Just taking misdirected "pleasure" in tearing people and things down. Maybe overcompensating for being lonely and having things done for him. I would have felt more sorry if he had been meaner and they showed how much his time as a dragon sharpened his character. The dragon bit was way too short as well as the bit with him being changed. He actually gets undragoned halfway through the book and the other half lets the reader appreciate the change. Structurally speaking the film could have been sparklingly good with the seven sword thing completely removed....Eustace would have just proven his character change with only the events from the book.
