Pre-viz is just a quick computer set-up of what the movie would look like. It rarely uses the correct colours for characters, creatures, even props. So Dragon Eustace's colouration in the pre-viz means nothing.

Eustace is sleeping on a dragon's hoard of gold when he becomes a dragon. So this is an interesting idea, whether the producers did it or not. The question is, does the book say what color 'dragon Eustace' actually is?

Yeah, that was only a color they could get it to when designing it. I don't think it will be that color in this film, plus that was done a long time ago.

It is ture that the in the Pre-viz the colors will be off (After all it is entriely anime.) But I was scraed when I first saw the title of this topic, I had thought that you meant that Dragon Eustace was turned into gold! Fail on my part.

Haha I thought the title meant 'gold' as in 'terrific news find'.

Instead, it's a fascinating observation. The pre-vis has nothing to do with the final colouring, but I wouldn't object to a gold dragon-Eustace. It's a cool color and more original than the usual green.

In my mind, Eustace Dragon was always a deep burgandy, but maybe I've watched Shrek too many times.
I don't think the colour itself matters as long as they still try to portray Will Poulter's face in the face of the dragon and don't go way off on the design. In the pre-viz stage also they're still merely experimenting with different shades and nothing is set in stone at that point in time.

I agree with you about that. I bet they'll change his dragon color for the movie, but I like what you said about it having some characteristics of Eustace. It's really important that when you see the dragon, you'll think, "Boy, that reminds me of Eustace." Not that it should look a lot like him, but just that it appears slightly familiar to Eustace.

I think maybe you're right! If they try to make the dragon so that you are reminded of Eustace, wouldn't the gold sort of make sense, as Eustace (or at least Will Poulter) has blonde hair.

When Eustace sees the other dragon it is described as having "a long lead colored snout, dull red eyes" etc. If the old dragon looked like lead, why shouldn't all dragons have a metallic color? It could end up being any color, but if the video is accurate, then this could explain why.
