Furthermore, according to Glimglum's particular table, I note that VDT is ahead of both Yogi Bear and Tron:legacy, both movies that would have a good sales rate being more child-friendly. VDT is just behind the King's Speech, which has ramifications beyond a mere entertainment film, given the amount of people who have stammers or other disabiliities. Whilst Megamind which came out in Australia at the same time as VDT, has sunk off the charts.

It would be a good time now for Fox/Walden to make up their minds about what they are going to do next and make an announcement about their intentions. ;)

Of course the purist in all of us wants a 100% adaptation. But the danger in that is ending up with a movie like Watchmen. A movie that is so close to its source material that it pleases graphic novel fans, but alienates all other moviegoers.

I have never asked for a movie without changes. Overall, I liked LWW and PC. The LotR movies made many huge changes to the story, but most of them were good changes.

The VDT movie felt like Philip Pullman's version of VDT. It was anti-Lewis in almost every way. It's hard not to get the sense (both from the movie itself and interviews) that not only did Apted not understand the book, he didn't even like it.

Watchmen alienated audiences because it was really smart and thoughtful, when most audiences just wanted to see another silly superhero movie and munch some popcorn. The only way to make Watchmen appeal to the masses would be to dumb it down. Significantly. ... And it's possible that is also the situation with Narnia, but I don't think so.

If Watchmen had been directed by someone who had the confidence to deviate from the source material more without losing the essence, it could have been better. But more profitable? Doubt it. It was a very interesting but flawed film. I have a lot of respect for it.

So the VDT sales have almost made $39 million?!? :-o Wow! I didn't think the movie (with tons of flaws) wouldn't sell very many DVDs/Blu-rays. Although I suppose there were several people who didn't want to see it in theatres and just waited to buy it or rent it instead. So there's a money making market different than the see the movie-buy the DVD crowd. Hmm...I've never really thought about that.

Sounds like the VDT dvd is doing pretty well. :) I also hope an announcement will come soon, it's hard to wait!

Overall, the VDT DVD rentals and sales are doing considerably well. I was worried for the first week or so because of the very low sales of $8 million. But now, at one point, the DVD sales went up 46%, and has even held position in the top 20 rentals. I guess the movie has strong legs, if not a strong box office. I wonder if Fox/Walden were just waiting for a few weeks of sales and rentals to start talking about another Narnia? Sometimes after DVD sales and rentals, I've noticed that sequels are announced after a few weeks or so.

Shops here in my town sell TVs with a VDT dvd included. Hope they'll sell a lot. :)

At first, I felt a burden lifted off my shoulders because I found I was able to just laugh at how silly almost every scene is...I think my little sister summed it up well when she seriously asked me if it was a parody of something (first viewing for her).

Perhaps her comment was less a response to the film and more a response to your reaction to it? Would she have made that comment if you weren't laughing through almost every scene?

Does anyone have any news on how the DVD sales are going currently?

Well, I haven't seen VDT in the top 50 for DVD rentals, so I would only guess that it's not anywhere on any sales charts.

What about foreign DVD sales? If anybody has anything like that, I would like to see that.

No idea. But the general unavailability of the DVD on ex-rental shelves, or in the supermarket suggests to me that it has done good business so far. During the school holidays both VDT and PC were out on loan continuously.

I didn't notice that Tron, Megamind, Gulliver's Travels and Yogi Bear did such tremendous business, stuck there on the outside on the $9 stand. And whilst all of these movies are available on 3D, unlike VDT, that situation may change on August 30th, I see.

I did see VDT DVDs displayed at 2 different Walmarts the last couple of days;
Blue-ray as well as regular.

The Numbers still updates VDT's regular DVD sales on the year-to-date chart here: Top Selling DVDs of 2011

The totals haven't changed too much as adjustments are made up or down on a regular basis. These are just educated guesses based on incomplete information. VDT could be doing better or worse overall.

Don't know why the studios won't release more complete and accurate information like they do for the theater box office. At least a rough idea on the home video front is better than none at all. :-

It seems that VDT hasn't done so badly after all. The placings haven't changed since I last looked at them. VDT is still marginally higher than the favoured Walt Disney Tron. And both are outmatched by King's Speech which is as it should be.

I've had an interesting time this week hunting down copies of an old movie. Do you remember a film called Erin Brockovich? It had a sort of ho-hum box office, but is still a much sought after item which is currently sold out. This little movie has a value that few other contemporary movies can boast. It seems that some of the points raised in this movie are so telling that watching this movie has become a classroom requirement in tandem with a particular assignment.

I expect the Fox studios, at any rate, are leading up to all sorts of fun and games on August 30th. That is when the 3D blu-ray version of Voyage of the Dawn Treader is to be released. I asked about this July 13th announcement at the local J&B HiFi store. The head honcho didn't know anything about it, and reassured me that this 3D blu-ray release was probably an America only release.

I investigated further, and found that very few 3D DVD's make their way to Australia, including Avatar and Alice in wonderland. Though Star Wars is going 3D, it seems. I checked the 3D listings at Amazon, and sure enough VDT appeared on that but to order it is a pre-order pending an August 30th release.

By the way, this 3D release is Fox's initiative. =;

For some reason VDT had a spurt and showed up again on The Numbers Weekly Domestic Blu-ray Sales Chart for the week ending August 7, 2011.

It might have had to do with the recent release of the Dawn Treader 3D Blu-ray release.

I still wish we had an idea on the foreign numbers, but that's good its had even just a little spurt. Every little bit helps make "Narnia 4". :)

Everyone: Rentrak has a list of the top ten selling DVDs and Blu-Rays in 2011 (2nd quarter). VDT comes in 8th in both lists.
