Not earthshaking but VDT did make the top ten on the weekly DVD rental chart on IMDB. Link: posting.php?mode=edit&f=2&p=162034
After 6 weeks and 2 days it's still hanging on.
For the record, I love the VDT film and have been one of it's biggest supporters. It's just disappointing that it's being nitpicked to death on here.
Interesting that in the General rating of the film thread, the votes for It was great/Good: 106; for OK/Wasn't that good/terrible: 53. So at this time there is a 2 to 1 ratio of positive to negative overall. Looks like you are not alone by a pretty good margin, CorazonBandido55.

Does anybody know how studios make money off of rentals?
They don't. The rental companies have to buy the DVD's first and then they rent them out to the public for a nightly or weekly fee. They might have agreements with DVD distributors to do this and to overcome copyright and licensing restrictions. That is what is called overheads. When DVD sales figures are calculated out, they include purchases for video stores and libraries as well as purchases for ordinary people.
The rental companies charge borrowers for the use of the DVD and make money that way. They also charge overdue fees, like libraries. If a DVD is popular they might have several copies of it to rent out, and once it stops being new, they sell off second-hand the excess copies, thus providing extra income to buy new DVD's for consumption.
Just saw today that VDT comes third on the blu-ray selling list here in Denmark. That's quite good!
I've bought ten dvds/blu-rays till now, some for presents. In one store, where I was today, I got the last copy! Hope this is a good sign.
I was at Blockbuster today renting another movie, and they told me I had a free rental that was going to expire soon. I was in a rush....and saw VDT lying on the counter. So I just grabbed that, wanting to hear the commentary. Turns out that version didn't have the commentary on it. Oh well. At least I didn't waste anymore money on this movie.
I did watch it (first time at home). At first, I felt a burden lifted off my shoulders because I found I was able to just laugh at how silly almost every scene is. But when it was over, and I heard the credits music again, I was reminded of how I felt the first time when I realized the movie was over. I felt all the old wounds open again. It's a silly movie and an abysmal adaptation. I think my little sister summed it up well when she seriously asked me if it was a parody of something (first viewing for her). ... Almost six months later, and I am still in shock by how embarrassingly poor the movie is. It still has not sunk in.
By the way, there were a few shots where the framing looked just awful. I assume this is the result of changing the aspect ratio for the Blu-ray release. Looks like it was done carelessly.

Getting upset because Tumnus didn't have a long tail would be a nit-pick. Saying they totally missed all the important themes of the book (actually going the exact opposite direction in many cases), and that it's a fundamentally different story, is hardly a nit-pick.
Intentional or not, this is an anti-Lewis movie.
There are some dvd/blu-ray copies, which include a small plush Reepicheep! That was a delightful surprise. I bought several, and I saw that others have bought them too.
Really good idea.

Same here. There was much that was unintentionally hilarious in the movie. The Green Mist ATTACK!!!1! scene at Narrowhaven was so cheesily hilarious that I laughed myself to tears over it. Then I rewinded it and watched it again and laughed some more. Reminded me of the sort of thing you would see in one of those dreadfully bad B movies on the SyFy Channel on Saturday nights.

I guess we just have to learn to disagree on this; VDT seemed more faithful to its themes than any of the previous movies. Obviously the green mist was cloaked over the plot, but otherwise I felt the movie was there in its entire form (along with its themes). I'm glad the movie turned out the way it is.
DVD sales are down, but more along the lines of conversion to movie streaming and blu-ray.
Of course the purist in all of us wants a 100% adaptation. But the danger in that is ending up with a movie like Watchmen. A movie that is so close to its source material that it pleases graphic novel fans, but alienates all other moviegoers - and is significantly not profitable enough to warrant a sequel. This is what I don't want any Narnia movie to be. I'd rather have a 7-movie set of Chronicles of Narnia that is 60-70% faithful, then 1 Narnia DVD that is 100% faithful... after all, if you want 100% faithfulness then thats what the book is for. I'm sure we will disagree on that also.

Actually the good news is that DVD sales were up 46.5% during the week ending May 29th, according to The Numbers Weekly Chart. This time I saw evidence for at least part of the reason: when I went shopping at Target during that time they had VDT on sale for $13.99 for a limited time. So saving $5-$6 apparently worked.
So the guestimated USA totals to date are:
DVD:------- 1,434,211 $24,353,250
Blue-ray:----- 681,250 $13,625,005
Totals:----- 2,115,461 $37,978,255

Really?! I thought I was the only one doing that!
Glad I'm not.
I don't think Watchman is a very good example. There's no possibility for a sequel, since Alan Moore has never written anything else set in that universe.

Watchmen made $185 million worldwide after a blockbuster sized $60 million opening weekend in the US alone. It shows that fans of the graphic novel raved about the movie - and translated to huge box office numbers on its opening weekend - but casual fans were not as excited about it, as shown by its steep drops on consecutive weekends. If any Narnia movie made that much worldwide not even Walden would consider green lighting another movie.

In case anyone still cares, I updated the sales "guesstimates" from the The Numbers Weekly Chart.
Guesstimated USA totals to date are:
DVD:------- 1,471,576 $24,956,124
Blue-ray:----- 698,999 $13,979,972
Totals:----- 2,170,575 $38,936,096
Also, after 9 weeks and 2 days, VDT is still in the top 20 on the weekly rental chart over at IMDB. It only dropped one position (17 to 18) although three new movies entered the top 20 ahead of it.
