And I finally bought the VDT DVD today. Why did I wait so long? Various reasons. But I bought the 2-DVD pack. I do not know why they packaged it that way instead of the way they did LWW and PC. I think it is a waste of packaging- especially the actual DVD boxes. I would have preferred having both DVDs inside the same case.
Haven't watched it yet- will do so tomorrow.
Sadly, it does not look like my library system has ordered it yet. Which is very shocking, since the previous two DVDs circulate A LOT. I will suggest it now.
my library got the DVD right away!
and my library has a built in theater - no joke! it's cool! they can, of course, only show DVDs since it's not a regular theater and they show them for free! I have now seen all the Narnia movies at my library's theater!
when they showed it, the theater (which only seats 80 people) was packed and some little kids even sat on the floor at the front. I have to say, it was the biggest and most appreciative audience I have ever watched VotDT with! everyone loved it! before the movie started, I even heard one guy in front of me say to his friend that he'd seen VotDT at the regular theater and it was really close to the book the way he remembered it!
at the end, there wasn't a dry eye in the theater and everyone clapped! it was so cool!
so I think there's lots of fans out there that will buy the DVD, or rent it at least. there's more fans of this movie than even I realised!
a man at my church bought the DVD and watched it and he agreed that it was better than most movies he'd seen in a while!

I found the Narnia stand at Coles, though the display side was only half full of a diminishing collection of Narnia DVD's, and the six other spaces on that side were stocked with other sorts of DVD's rather than VDT ones, as before. There weren't any Narnia DVD's on the undisplayed side, which was full of other sorts of DVD's, not all of them recent.
Coles is the food mart side of the K-Mart department store next door, so although they both sell DVD's Coles ones are all family sorts of films. K-mart, unlike Coles, sells DVD players and televisions as well as DVD's, you see.
I'm learning something new about retailing because of VDT.
According to The Numbers, VDT actually moved into third place in the week ended April !7th. It finished behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Pt. 1
and very close to Tangled's third week totals. Link: http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/w ... isweek.php
It also reached over 1 million units sold in the USA. No news on the Blue-ray sales as of this morning.
It still has its own stand at one of the local Walmarts and Harry Potter is now back to back with it. They also added a new release stand near the checkout counters in the front and there are lots of copies of VDT there along with the other new releases.
EDIT:
The Hollywood Reporter says VDT finished second in sales and also has this in their current DVD article:
Deathly Hallows and Dawn Treader finished in the top two spots on Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc chart as well, with Tron: Legacy at No. 3 and Disney’s Blu-ray release of The Incredibles at No. 4. The previous Potter films took spots 8-12 on the Blu-ray chart.

Now that's news. It sounds like Fox's "Perfect gift for Easter" marketing worked. I have to say, they're right. It actually is a great gift for Easter.
I personally know some kids who got VDT in their Easter baskets this year.
Of course it is no surprise that HP7 took first place, but I am rather surprised to see that VDT held its own.
HP7 may be a good film, but it is not the perfect gift for Easter.
Maybe it's the perfect gift for Halloween or something...

I'm glad to hear that VDT is doing pretty well. The local Fred Meyer's store still has a special stand for it, but the stand is much smaller now and the dragon head is gone. Hopefully that's partially because they sold very many DVDs and didn't have enough to fill the stand anymore!

Take a look at this very informative and useful article.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/5885934/How-f ... make-money
It talks about how studios make their money, and points out that they make more money from TV deals than frmo home entertainment or box office sales.
Personally, I think Fox is realising they need to make the narnia movies with an international audience in mind, not the USA 's audience. If they create the next Narnia for this international audience, in the way they make it creatively and also the way they promote and market the movie and do merchandising, they will make more money than Voyage did.

3rdkid, did you read the whole article? In it, they point out that studios only take in a small percentage of foreign box office. Given the large budgets that these films have, if the Narnia films can't make money in the U.S., they're not commercially successful.
Now on to the DVD sales update: As of 4/24, VDT has made $21,455,438 in DVD sales, and it’s sold 730,000 copies on Blu-ray . . . pitiful.
I'm calling this as "significantly worse than PC", rather than "Noooooooo" because of the shorter first week.
That's really sad. I'm really sure most of it has to do with people being able to watch it through other means if they didn't want to buy it. Plus it really isn't that great of a movie to buy anyhow.

If you add the Blue-ray sales to the DVD sales the video sales total is probably closer to $35 million for the USA only. And the rental revenue will probably be pretty good when all is said and done. Too bad we don't have the weekly rental amounts like they used to have.
And there are other, newer revenue streams that are increasing: Internet Video on Demand (iVOD): http://www.storagenewsletter.com/news/o ... ternet-vod.
We also don't know the TV revenue in its various forms. (Sure wish we could see the studio accounting ledgers. )
Guess the best indicator of all will be whether The Magician's Nephew is greenlit or not.
EDIT:
I think VDT is probably selling well in Christian book stores and those numbers probably are missing from The Numbers chart.

There is definitely no "a" in definite.
The Mind earns by doing; the Heart earns by trying.
For reasons mentioned and alluded to earlier in the thread - amounting generally to changes in the economy and the home video market - it really isn't fair to compare the DVD sales of this movie to the sales of PC or LWW, or certainly to call them "pitiful."
Much better to look at it relative to its competition right now. How does it stack up in the CURRENT market?
This DVD is beating such titles as Yogi Bear, Little Fockers, and even Tron Legacy, and holding its own against Harry Potter (at about one-third of HP's sales).
The fact that VODT is beating Tron on DVD (the two of which can be easily compared as a "race situation", since they were released only three days apart) is a huge victory!
VODT is the 12th bestselling DVD of the year (in revenue) so far. And while it will of course be overtaken by other DVDs by the end of the year, it's also going to overtake (in revenue if not units) at least six of the DVDs on the list now, which have already "done their thing" while VODT still has plenty of gas in the tank.
Prince Caspian ranked 15 for 2008. VODT will probably be comparable.
It's doing fine!

Good point, GrizzledFish. Things have changed a lot in Home Video retail since Prince Caspian. VDT will most likely be in the top ten for the year in sales sometime in June if it can hold on with stronger than usual legs.
Let's hope it continues to have steady sales from week to week.

Phew! GrizzledFish, What you said makes a lot of sense! I really hope VDT does well and stays in the charts...I havn't bought it yet for myself but i'm deffinately going to do so soon...Anything to keep the series going!

Consider the films that you are using for comparison, though. Yogi and Fockers were widely panned by critics and general movie-goers alike.
As for Legacy, it has a massive blu-ray share (upwards of 60%), contrasted with VDT's respectable blu-ray share. So, overall, Legacy is doing much better on home discs, even though VDT is beating it in the DVD format.
That being said, your points about the change in home entertainment economics are quite valid. More people were buying DVDs back then. If my extrapolations are correct, VDT has done much better than PC on blu-ray.
I tried to come up with a formula to predict the rest of VDT's DVD run, but the market is way too unpredictable. Its -35.1% drop seems pretty good.
I'm hoping for like, $35M in DVD sales? Blu-ray sure messed things up...
