Tron: Legacy' Dominates DVD, Blu-ray Charts
I found a list with only precentages. Voyage Of The Dawn Treader sold as much as 43% of what Tron:Legacy did in dvd and blu-ray sales.
But considering it was released half a week later, on friday, it might have done well. I think we'll have to wait till next week to see where it stand amongst it's competition.
44% of the Dawn Treader discs sold were blu-ray.
No fair the Walmart I work at doesn't have a display shaped like a ship. It does have a display though. I sold two copies of VDT.
I got my DVD from Amazon because the news story said it would help NarniaWeb and I could get gift cards with my credit card points (although I ended up spending most of those on other things. One was a VDT poster.

That same article linked in the post above by Rilian The Disenchanted did contain this statement:
(In all fairness, Dawn Treader was released on a Friday, three days after the traditional Tuesday, giving it fewer days in stores for the tracking period.)
Also, I had to go to the local Walmart today which has the single display stand for VDT. It is still back to back with the Tangled display but what was interesting was that the 2 sides of the Tangled display were now full of VDT DVDs,; not Tangled DVDs.
The VDT display only has space in front for holding the DVD units with 2 flat sides. The front was restocked and full but the Tangled sides with the VDT units looked like they were selling. (I hope so for MN's sake.)
Maybe VDT will have strong video legs and do well over a longer period of time. Time will tell...

I'm not surprised that Tron is doing well. It had a full display available, plus a poster flanking the new HPDH1 display down at the local K-Mart. That DVD was releasd today. On the other hand, unlike Megamind, I've yet to see either a Tangled poster or any DVD's for sale.
Curiouser and curiouser! After a couple of weeks I still have not seen a single banner or poster up advertising VDT anywhere in our local K-mart, as I mentioned on the other thread. Last week there were three packed shelves of VDT DVD's there, in the New Releases section but this week none of them were to be found anywhere in sight, no matter where I thought they could have been shifted.
In next door Coles I did find one of those cardboard stands advertising VDT on the side. Alas it was full of other DVD's such as Percy Jackson and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Not a VDT DVD in sight.
Apparently for every purchase of a VDT DVD you get a free 3D ticket to Rio which is about to be released.
It's pretty crazy that a store would use the VDT stand for other movies.
The only local supermarket I've been into since VDT came out - Fred Meyers - has one of the big ship stands, which is pretty cool. And it was full of only VDT DVDs! I haven't seen it been there since the 8th, so I don't know how it's selling.

Variety clearly explains who has the big Dawn Treader ship and who doesn't. We reported this on Aslan's Country last week.
Starting Friday, a large replica of the ship in the pic will drop anchor at the entrance of 3,000 supermarkets nationwide that are owned by Kroger, Safeway, SuperValu, Giant Eagle and H-E-B. Overall, the homevid will be promoted at 6,000 stores operated by those companies, which include the Ralphs, Fry's, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco and Smith's brands. . . .
The presence won't replace high-profile distribution deals for the "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" at big-three retailers Walmart, Target and Best Buy, which will push their own exclusive versions of the disc.
Well, I accidentally pre-ordered the VDT DVD, when I desperately wanted the Blu-Ray. When it arrived, I gave it to my neighbor for his birthday, but only after going out and purchasing the Blu-Ray version. Alas, my friends through me a surprise party for my birthday and we watched VDT. When the party was over, my friends gave me a DVD copy of the movie. After everybody had left, I told my one friend to keep it, as, at the time, I already had two copies. I just thought it was entertaining that I was involved in the purchasing of at least 3 purchases of VDT for home viewing.

I told most of the people at my church to go out and get it. many of them did, or at least rented it! so I helped in that way!

Well, it definitely hasn't started out as well as either PC or LWW so far:
VDT:

PC:
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2008/NARN2-DVD.php
LWW:
One factor that may be skewing the results compared to the other movies that are out right now is the fact that VDT was only out for 2 days of the week, whereas the others were out of 5 or 7. But I have the feeling that even if we got data for the next 3 days, to level the playing field, it still wouldn't come close to PC's numbers.
VDT was out the fewest days and still finished fourth. So the next weeks' rankings will give a more complete and accurate picture.
But even with that the DVD sales are definitely lower that the first two. Maybe VDT will be a slow and steady seller and do well over a longer period of time. We'll
see.
Interesting that Rotten Tomatoes has VDT as second on its rental chart but IMDB doesn't even have it in the top 20 on its chart.
EDIT1:
Home Media Magazine has a more positive projection for VDT's first full week in stores: http://www.homemediamagazine.com/resear ... pack-23661
EDIT2:
The Hollywood Reporter had an explanation for a movie's not appearing on the rental chart. I think this applies to VDT as well.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, Fockers debuted at No. 19 because Universal holds back its new releases from Netflix and Redbox for 28 days. Following Tron: Legacy at No. 1 was the previous week’s top renter, The Tourist, from Sony Pictures, which slipped to No. 2 after two weeks on top.

For a new release it vanished quite soon in our shops. Dawn Treader has not been advertised at all, apart from the sides of a stand in Coles, the most prominent part filled with anything but VDT DVD's. In J&B Hi Fi, or K-mart you have to ask, as it isn't displayed at all. I eventually found it in both places. There were only a couple of copies crammed in the Disney section, side-by-side with a LWW/PC combo. No Blu-rays either.
VDT still has its own display case at one of the local Walmarts in my local area here in the USA.
Another interesting note is apparently the Blue-ray numbers are being kept seperately from the DVD chart numbers. Here is a link to an article from The Numbers which indicates this quite clearly. The Blue-ray numbers are given and are obvoiusly not included in the chart totals because:
Blu-ray sales were less competitive, despite Tron: Legacy sales being split between a single and a double-shot release. The former sold 940,000 units, which was more than enough to top the chart, and more than it sold on DVD.
So according to that article, VDT sold 260,000 Blue-rays in addition to the 477,528 DVD units sold. That's a little bit better for a partial first week of business.

Most people probably won't buy it at all. Browsing the local library catalog today shows 43 holds waiting for 45 available copies of VDT on DVD for loan. The price even went down after I bought my copy off of Amazon. Do they take into account rental copies through subscription services like Netflix (or maybe those are lumped into the sales figures?).

yeah I've noticed that people are more likely to look for the DVD at the library.....but hey, the economy in the USA isn't doing so great and gas prices are soaring. so not everyone has the extra cash for the DVD......
but I keep telling people to get it if they can!
