Well, I got all excited reading GlimGlum's last comment on the box office thread. Yes, soon we can talk about DVD sales, and some of us will have our very own copy. ;;)

Then, it occurred to me, why can't we get started talking about DVD sales now? It's only a month away, so I'm creating a poll for predictions. If this sort of thing already exists on this forum, you can close my thread and tell me where to go (the other thread I mean :p ).

Major LOL at the top selection (good thing I wasn't drinking anything). :p
I selected $50-$75 million just because I have this idea it will do at least better than PC but that artistically not many would want to add this to their rewatch library unless they're die-hard fans/fans trying to support the future of the movies. Probably most will rent I hate to say.

Not likely to beat PC for a couple reasons. VDT releases on a Friday instead of a Tuesday, as PC did. That alone makes it a bad comparison. PC went on sale during the holiday season, not April. And DVD sales are generally down since 2008.

Working in VDT's favor: it's huge multiplier. VDT had strong legs over the holidays, suggesting a lot of people saw it more than once and word of mouth was strong. That bodes well for home video sales, compared to PC - which opened big then completely deflated.

Aren't Tron: Legacy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows releasing the same week on dvd/bd? I hope around PC's numbers. Since it didn't perform as well in the USA (less admissions) but it's still fresh in memory, only 2 months after it's left the theatre. So hopefully 30-50 million $.

I don't normally choose a DVD because of the cover, but for the information that is on the back. The stuff you need a magnifying glass to see most often, such as copyright, producer, year of publishing, who is in the film etc. Yes people do look at such information for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes because it is their job to do so.

And by the way the plain brown paper with little more than the title edition to be released in Australia is not a patch on your colourful graphic VDT, which I'm sure will blend nicely with PC & LWW. ;) I still won't complain, given the huge amount of dreary technical programs which don't bother to display graphics at all, except for the company logo. But if it bothers me as much as it seems to bother you, I can always organise a better cover for myself. ;)

I chose that it will do significantly better than PC, even despite HPDH1 and other movies coming out. Easter is late this year, not until April 22nd, and the long weekend this year is merging with Anzac Day as well. Not far away is Mother's Day, which might account for a few sales, if you know Mother, or better still, Grandma, might like it. Maybe in line with the Royal Mail stamp collection, featuring both Narnia & HP stamps, she might even appreciate it if both VDT and HPDH1 come her way for her viewing.

Furthermore, VDT is going to be in 3D, and such movies seem hard to come by. People who have bought 3D TV sets will be attracted to something like that. You can get Blu-ray, but not all Blu-ray movies are 3D. The 3D options weren't available when PC and LWW were produced, and though I'm sure PC, at any rate, is out in Blu-ray, there were none to be had last Christmas.

This is intended as a compliment---that really sounds very much like a cataloger's viewpoint. ;) :) I love reading the fine print too.

I think Tangled is also coming out the same time (?) so that might also be competition too (again).

I voted $50-75 million (significantly better than PC).

I doubt that VDT will make much more than 60 million, because of all the competition it will face during its DVD sales run. I saw quite a few movies coming out then. However, VDT has a special chance at doing well because its being released slightly before Easter- the first film, which focused quite a bit on Christmas and Easter (hitting both marks well) did well in both of these holidays. VDT could follow that trend, despite its lack of being associated with the holidays- bringing back the business that LWW did at this time. "Hey, I bought LWW and it was a great Easter basket gift! Maybe this one is too!" *places in basket*

...but that's just my thoughts on it. Like I said, I don't know whether the sales will take off or deflate.

unfortunately, i think less than 10 million is most realistic.

noooooooo! :) Gosh,In the nicest possible way I hope you are wrong!
I guessed around $50-75 million, because It wont do as well as LWW (I don't think) but I think that it has more chances of beating PC. Especially as fans are trying to save the series now as well.

50 -75 million is what I voted for. I definitely think enough people said they like VODT better than PC to get better than PC in DVD sales.

I chose 75-125 because I'm thinking Russia. Here it was a big hit, so its gonna sell really well. But you can never say how big the movie by how much money it makes, in my opinion. Because most people I know don't bother to buy the DVD, but perfer to watch it for free online.

I went with $30-50 mill (around PC.) I guess cause VDT theatre run seems to be ending around PC's numbers, I would expect the same for the DVD sales. Hopefully its a little more, but I will be happy if it it comes close to PC.

I ended up voting "30-50mil" though I think the final total will be slightly less than PC. Same as the box office.

Well, I got all excited reading GlimGlum's last comment on the box office thread.

I guess I better post here then. ;)

I voted for $75-$125 million but for VDT's overall total, not just the first week. I believe a certain number of people have been waiting for the DVD who did not want to pay the higher 3D prices. Therefore, rental revenue should be strong as well.

I also think that among average viewers VDT will have a higher "likeable" factor than PC (not that it's a better movie, just more appealing). Some personal friends of mine who haven't read the books said they liked VDT better than PC so that could be the case for a lot more people.

Won't be too much longer before we get an idea of what the actual numbers will be. :)
