VDT also has the advantage that it is a "sequel" and many people have seen the other movies. That will encourage people to see VDT. Tangled is a brand new film that doesn't belong to a previously existing franchise.

Okay here's something quite interesting. It appears Narnia is currently tracking in the mid 40's, while TRON is in the low 30's currently. This is looking quite good to Narnia. This means it could very possibly open to 55 million or maybe even 60 million! That would be fantastic

You can read about it at the bottom of the page.

I'm feeling like a complete noob here...

What does that even mean?
That just means that based on surveys and polls there is enough interested in Narnia that if it opened right now it should make about 45 million opening weekend. Tron Legacy would make about 30-35 million. That is sort of a big deal since most people who follow the box office full expected Tron to do better than Narnia.
If it is at 45 million right now, than it could very likely open to 55-60 million. Maybe even more. It would be hard, but it COULD open to as much as LWW opened to which was around 65 million. This is very good!
Another interesting thing about Tron is that it has officially been rated PG. Some were expecting it to get a PG-13 rating, but apparently not.

This is very good news considering that buzz is just barely starting to pick up, and the continued buzz will create a bigger box office debut. Although ultimately word-of-mouth will be more important than a huge opening weekend. I read your posts and regularly read the Narnia threads on box office mojo, although I haven't made the effort to register and post yet. I find 'box office tracking' for this movie a very fascinating subject.

You should definitely get an account Corazon! It would be great to have another Narnia lover on the forums!

Honestly, I was much more interested in Tangled before the trailers came out. There is nothing in the trailer that appeals to me whatsoever. I didnt laugh or even smile once. And the story doesnt seem much like Rapunzel.
This isn't the first time Disney will ruin a princess. The Little Mermaid is so far beyond ruined that I don't even want to talk about it, and The Princess and the Frog, though the movie was cute, was fairly ridiculous.
The theaters around me arent even considering Narnia as a big release, Tron is supposedly the next "big one" even though they had that huge Narnia display up weeks before Tron and placed in a more visable area. I keep going to all the managers of theaters in the area because I don't even know if there's going to be a midnight showing here. It's mildly depressing.

I can see Tangled being good competition. If it weren't for the fact that VDT is coming out then, I'd probably go see it.

Well, Tangled opened yesterday, and is estimated to rake in around 65 million for the 5 day weekend. That is quite good, and certainly better than most studios were estimating. However by the time Dawn Treader comes out two weeks from now, I don't think Tangled will have that much of an impact on it.

Tangled is also getting good reviews. I am pleased to see that it is more like a traditional classic than a Shrek rip-off(which is the vibe I got from the trailers).
Still, the hype should die down by the time VotDT comes out.
Winter Is Coming
OK, I take what I said in GMD back because I just read the spoiler for Tangled, and I think that if I weren't saving my money to see VDT a gazillion times, I would want to see it in theatres, and that's pretty good I guess because I normally wait for dvd. But overall, I think the popularity will die down by the time VDT comes out.

Good news! VdT made CNN's Top 10 Movies of the Holiday Season (and neither Tangled or Tron made the list).
Bad news: Three other films also opening on December 10th made the list too.
Oops.
Read the list here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/ ... l?hpt=Sbin
That's very encouraging!
Ok just saw Tangled and I have admit that it's a VERY good movie... Just glad there are several weeks before it and VDT.

The Tourist has been getting a lot of attention recently. VDT will still probably top it, but it won't be as overwhelmingly as we would like. TRON will be #1 its respective weekend, just like King Kong was, then once both movies' novelty even out the week after, I'm interested to see what happens.
