I loved watching that YouTube video and am all for the playful sparring scene. I was reminded of another seafaring, swashbuckling fairytale favorite of mine, Disney's Peter Pan by the fight and think that the fight can really be amusing, visually stunning, developmentally rich, and also give the crew a chance to show off the Dawn Treader in ways that just walking about don't allow.
I agree with many people in that there is no way Caspian should win the dual, or even that they should tie. I think either Edmund should win, or it should get stopped unexpectedly: Eustace swings Reep around by his tail and they have to intervene, or someone spots the sea serpent or the underwater people, or they find land or something.
I think that this could be a sorta fun scene, although it seems pointless to add things like this - there is a ton of material in VoDT that they won't be able to fit into the movie; I wish they would leave the EdxCaspian sword fight out and include things like the underwater shepherdess and Lucy talking to the Magician.
@ icarus, I misread your post about "tools, not toys", and I thought you meant that they shouldn't be fooling around with swords - using them as toys. It made me think - should they?

seen it!! didn't like it much...
i was going through the the NW gallery when i spotted these lucky shots:they must've been taken soon after the sparring mishap with Skandar. note that Ben cleverly turns his back against the crowd. also i dont remember ever seeing Skandar's body language looking so apologetic

I have said so before on the old forum, if Edmund and Caspian duel each other with swords Edmund must win. I am so glad it looks like Edmund is winning in this duel. Also, it maybe not only a duel to see who is better but maybe whoever wins gets to teach Eustace. In other words, they are deciding who is best qualified for the job of teaching Eustace.
Edmund beating Caspian in a friendly duel would certainly fit in with Ben Barnes comments of the kids "stealing his thunder" (or whatever the original uncensored quote actually was - i think it was closer to "raining on his parade" to be honest).
Caspian losing a duel to Edmund would perhaps be slightly humiliating for him, especially as the new King, and especially in front of all his own men. I could definitely see how it would "dampen his spirit", again to paraphrase Ben Barnes.
If they had established Caspian's reverence of the Pevensies and anything relating to the old days in PC, Caspian having Rhindon wouldn't bother me so much. But they didn't do that. Rarley in these films have we gotten a sense of awe and reverence in the characters.
And it would still bother me. Aragorn fights with the sword of his ancestors in The Lord of the Rings, and it's perfectly fine. Yet the story still has him showing reverence to the weapon. The issue here is that the purpose is skewed. Rhindon is the sword of the Peter, the high king. It's not the sword of all the Narnian kings. Plus it seems they sort of ripped this off The Lord of the Rings at this point.

I agree Rillian, it really seemed like they were copying LOTR. I really didn't like the fact that he might be using Rhindon. By saying he would look after it it did not give him the right to use it. In VDT, Caspian tells Lucy he brought her vial as part of the royal treasury and gets it for her out of a safe. I would think Rhindon is part of the royal treasury as well and should be kept safe, not used for common, everyday use, right?
I saw the movie....and was disappointed
For whatever it's worth, judging from the most recent photos, it looks like Caspian gives Rhindon to Edmund at some point of the journey. I don't know if that absolves Caspian of major disrespect, but I thought I'd point it out.
Good spot GymFan..... Perhaps Edmund wins it in the duel?
Edmund had better win the duel. I much more like the idea of Edmund having Peter's sword then Caspian. It is still a little strange, but this is in no way the end all for me.
It does seem to suggest more so that there may be some sort of disagreement between Caspian and Edmund. I wonder if they are expanding on what happens between the two of them at deathwater island.
There are no clouds in the sky. There is only the open sun and the Lord watches.
Oooh, very good eye Gymfan. Thanks for the picture icarus. That's a very interesting theory. Perhaps Edmund doesn't like the fact that Caspian is using his brother's sword? But really, Peter gave it to him, it's kind of his to use as he chooses whether it's in good taste or not.

dang, i didnt even spot that until you said so, good eye Gymfan!
depending on when the duel takes place (i'm pretty sure they're shooting out of sequence), Caspian bears Rhindon all throughout the shoot except for this scene. in fact Caspian has no sword! now why would he be in full battle gear but has no sword by his side?

this scene is most unusual: we have a little girl jump overboard, the first mate go after her, Lucy is distraught, as is Edmund, and Caspian has no sword but in full battle gear. what is going on?!?

I'm not surprised they are shooting out of sequence on the ship. They have to shoot those in a particular order to save money and to get those scenes done in the most efficient way possible.
To me it looks like the sword fight is mainly just a couple of boys stretching their legs and getting in some practice time. In some of the fiction books I've read that are set at sea, the crew has to practice with weapons to stay sharp in case something happens. It is probably safe to assume that there might, even if this isn't it, be something similar happen aboard the Dawn Treader.

That pretty much sums up my mental status at the moment.
I think that this little friendly duel is going to be pretty much similar to the Edmund/Trumpkin fight.
Go Edmund!!!

That would be a very interesting scene to have in the movie. But I'd enjoy having it in there
