I didn't notice it on the big Screen but it look really odd at home. I wonder, that if they meant to, why? Like it was said above it might be due to the invisble-ness (I know the right word just can't spell it) of Aslan
memento mori
glumPuddle: I think it's meant to be that way.
Which way was intended? The theatrical version or DVD version?
I have no idea. I may never know. but I think it works both ways, in my opinion

I finally watched the movie on Blu-ray (used a free rental). The shadow shot looks really weird. Not seeing Aslan's feet is a big, unnecessary distraction. The Blu-ray version ruins one of the few shots in the movie I could say I loved.
I have no idea. I may never know.
But you must agree that one of the versions was an error, even if you're not sure which one.
I think the Blu-ray version must be the error. Two reasons: 1) If Apted wanted the top part of the frame to be seen, cropping it that way for theaters would have been very easy. 2) There are a few other shots in the DVD version where the framing looks terrible, suggesting the aspect ratio shift was done carelessly.
