[Closed] Aslan's CGI - The Verdict

Although I admire the work that has gone into creating Aslan in all three films, to me, he always comes across as a caricature of a real lion. The effect of 'eyebrows'/overly emotive eyes has always irked me a bit, but I have come to accept it now as part of the character, not the lion. He is slightly out of proportion and does not move quite like the real thing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, but he has no actual realism for me.

Having said that, there are scenes in all three movies where I think he looks spectacular, and as the character Aslan (what I think he should look like from reading the books) they have done a great job and I'm happy with it. Liam's voice suits the CGI creation perfectly too.

LWW was definitely the best. I don't understand why they changed it up. If it ain't broke; don't fix it. Well...they tried to fix it.

I voted
1. VDT, 2. PC. 3 LWW.

I think that LWW was hit and miss. Some scenes (like when he is talking to Edmund after he returns from the witch, and when he is talking to Peter Alone, he looks very life like). But other scenes, like when he is killed by the witch, and when he comes back to life, he looks very fake.

Price Caspian, in my opinion, was over all better aslan. It didn't have scenes with as good CGI as LWW, but it also never had ASLAN CGI as bad as LWW. But I didn't like the direction they took with the portial of Aslan as a golden lion in PC. I liked the way he looked more like a REAL lion in VDT and LWW.

As far as specifically Aslan's CGI in VDT I thought it was amazing, he looked so good and so real almost 100% of the time (not that he had much screen time).

SIDE NOTE: the CGI with Reep was consistently good. WHile the dragon went from one extreme to the other. (the first scene where he flies from the island to the boat is terrible.......while the campfire scene is absolutely fantastic).

I bet Aslan will look a little better on the DVD/BD.

I have been watching VDT on Blu-Ray a couple of times, and I must say that Aslan's appearance looks phenomenal! Especially beside Aslan's Country, I think he looks nothing short of amazing. Wow!

I bet Aslan will look a little better on the DVD/BD.

Pretty much everything looked better on DVD... but I'm getting off topic.

I'm kind of split on Aslan's golden color, I mean on one hand it's not the most natural, but on the other it makes him more majestic...and it was gold in the book.

Aslan looks consistently good, as does Reep. I am not sure which hue I prefer for Aslan, though. He looks fine in the BD transfer, but there is something very eye catching about the golden tones seen in the trailer (also, finally, included as an extra).

Well, now that I have seen VDT, I can officially comment on the Aslan in VDT.

This is an inbetween version. The interactions with characters works on the quality of PC (improved over LWW). There's more of a sense of Lucy hugging a "real" lion at the end of VDT with out the oddities seen at points in both LWW and PC. There were some cringe moments in VDT. For example, when Aslan first appears to Lucy in the VDT cabin, his walk and first appearance feel very puppetlike. I was watching the movie with a friend, both of our first viewings, and we both cringed and made similar comments about Aslan's look here. A little further into this scene and the believability poured in a bit more, after the first shock I suppose.

Model: did anyone else find Aslan's proportions changing from time to time? I have to view the film again, but in the end, where Aslan walks on the beach, the proportions feel right, but he feels a bit "smooshed" in height when he undragons Eustace.

On coloration: nice to see a variety of color in Aslan's mane for VDT (as previous films as well). I have to go back and see if it's consistent through the film or not (PC had a tendency to change). I miss the gold coloration from "Act II" of LWW. His skin tone in VDT feels more lion-ish than Aslan-ish, if that makes since.

On Movement and Weight: I have to go back for most scenes (other than mentioned above) to check on this. For the most part, I don't think there was much of a sense of weight. LWW succeeded very well at this (i.e. jumping off the rock after talking to Edmund and the heavy steps taken towards the Stone Table). Nothing stands out like that in VDT to me (but, again, I have to go back and really look). The ending scene, with Aslan's shadow, was a bit odd for this category. Never minding the fact that Aslan's feet don't have a landing point, there's something that I can't quite place my finger on here. He looks like a lion, but moves and feels like something different. I can't tell if I like it or not, as though they are hinting at that he's not really a lion at all, but something more without smacking the idea over your head (like certain other things in the film). I absolutely love the flow of Aslan's mane in the very last scene (boy, I would hate to be the one to track all the movement). Perhaps, a bit over the top at times, but a marvel to look at. Overall, his movements were believable, on a first viewing.

Final verdict: LWW wins out- coloration, model, movement, weight, and most importantly, believability.

Having seen Aslan again on the Blu-ray I definitely think that he looks the best on VDT. He looks absolutely incredible! I think he will continue to look better as the series progresses.

Okay, definitely I'm bias in Aslan's CGI in the LWW and I really love aslan jumping off the rock also but I must praise Aslan's CGI in VODT I'm really amaze especial how beautiful lighting of Aslan. I think the best image of Aslan goes to VODT next is LWW then PC. ;) :D
