2. WHY are people superstitious about cats? Superstitions about cats started in the Medieval times when cats, originally given to women for company, then became associated with witchcraft. Black cats, considered lucky by ancient Celtic people and the Japanese, were considered especially unlucky by people in Western Europe and UK.

2. WHY do people in USA celebrate Thanksgiving? The tradition started when the pilgrims and Native Americans shared a feast together, celebrating the pilgrim's survival that year, and they were naturally thankful for that. :) We still celebrate it because a) it's a national holiday and b) it's an awesome holiday (that second reason may be a result of bias ;) ).

2. WHY do you usually use yeast when you make bread? Yeast is necessary in most types of European bread to make the dough rise, and double in size before baking as loaves. Yeast is merely another name for leaven, and in the Middle East and India there are many sorts of unleavened or flat breads.

2. WHY did William the Conqueror think he had a right to invade England in 1066? According to the Bayeaux Tapestry, Harold had been shipwrecked on the coast of Normandy, when he allegedly promised over a bible that William, a vague relative of Edward the Confessor's mother Emma, would inherit the English throne. However, up to that point it was the Witan who decided who was to be king of England, rather than deciding by such private agreements.
