As an Australian outsider, I was taught that the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865 was mainly about the Southern States wanting slavery as opposed to the Northern States wanting to abolish slavery. But when I looked up articles like this one I found that there were other complicating reasons for that civil war like state rights, fair taxation and economic inequalities between largely agrarian states as opposed to the more prosperous industrialised states. I could explain any of UK's 5 civil wars a good deal better.
