Jenine's eyes widened "Spiders! No! I'm afraid of spiders!" she said clinging to Sam

"Well I can't say I like them either" Sam said slightly sarcastically. "But we'll have to go in. We got to get that book!"

Banglow followed them to the entrance of the hole.
"Good luck!" he said and then pushed them down the hole.

Jen felt like she was going to fall forever. So putting out her hands, she caught herself on a root. "Sam!" she yelled. There was no response. Her hands hurt from hanging on to the root, she felt herself slipping, and then, suddenly, she fell...two feet onto the floor of the hole.

"Whew!" she exhaled, "That was close!" Suddenly the ground beneath her gave way and with a startled shriek she fell again- onto an enormous white feather pillow. Sam was sitting on the other side of the pillow, grinning at her.
"Comfy, isn't it?" he commented.

Jen glared at him. "Admit it: you were scared too."
Sam grinned.
Just then, I voice said: "Who are you? What do you want?"
Jen said:

"Uh, Sam..." she whispered, looking around, "did you just hear that?"
"What do you think I am, deaf??" Sam said sarcastically. Then he replied to the voice cautiously, looking around trying to find out who was speaking. "I am Sam and this is Jen, and we are here looking for a book."

The speaker came into view. Jen smiled.
It was a cat standing on it's back legs like a human and it wore a gold imbroidered vest. It spoke.
"Greetings, you who have come far. I trust you had a pleasant trip?"
Jen shook her head.
"No matter, " said the cat. "It can't be helped. My name is Glitter."

"My name is Jen," said Jen. Glitter nodded.
"Yes, I am aware of that," he responded.
Hesitating, Glitter asked, "May I ask where your friend Sam is?"
Suddenly, there was a giant crash!

Jen looked up. Sam wasn't next to her!
She scanned the cave-like room they were standing in. No Sam.
"Where's Sam?" Jen asked. "What have you done with him?"
Glitter grinned. His teeth glinted and Jen shuddered.
"He's in the dungeon for the time being," the cat said smoothly, taking a handkerchief out of his pocket and mopping his brow.

Suddenly lights switched on in the hole to reveal a stage, and a bunch of other cats in chairs below it. "Man ol' Glitter that was great!!" they all said. "Lady, are you okay?" one of the cats asked. Jen was as white as a ghost. "Um, I dont know! Where is Sam? Please tell me where he is!!"

Glitter put a hand on her shoulder. "Now, now, don't get upset. Just look behind the curtain."
Jen pulled back the heavy red satin curtain and saw Sam standing there. Sam hugged her.
"Calm down, Jen," he said. "I'm alright."
Jen fainted.

For some odd reason, this reaction completely discomfited Glitter. He gave a yowl of surprise and began frantically calling for water to be brought. But there wasn't any to be found (strange how you can't find things when you need them), so they dragged a huge barrel of Gatorade to him instead. This he dumped single paw-edly on Jen. She awoke drenched in a florescent green color.

"What on earth happened?" Jen spluttered as she came awake.
Sam helped Jen sit up, glaring at Glitter. "Why did you do that?"
Glitter shrugged. "She passed out. Gatorade serves no purpose other than waking those who fall asleep."
Jen stared at him. "What does that mean? Does no one sleep here?"
Glitter looked her right in the eye. "If you fall asleep down here, you die."
Sam shook his head. "So you use Gatorade to wake people up? Can't you use something less colorful and messy?"
Glitter said, "We don't have water down here, so we make do."

"Ugh, alright then." Sam said irritably. "Jen, are you alright?" "I am as good as can be expected," Jen gave the evil eye to Glitter. "So you really die if you fall asleep down here? Well, you guys must be really tired!" Sam said, changing the subject. "How long have you guys been down here? And how did you get down here?" "Aw, its a long story. Don't feel like telling it at the moment. Anyway, you were saying something about a book?" Glitter replied, throwing himself onto a overstuffed chair.

Jen stood up, rubbing a sore arm from when she'd fainted. "Come on, Sam, let's get out of here."
Glitter just sat there. Then he said, "You can't get out until you get the book."
Jen slapped Glitter across the face. "You jerk! I hate you!"
Sam grabbed her arms. "Calm down."
