Why not billions, trillions and quadrillions when people discuss money?

What about using much smaller denominations in discussions of money such as the ones most people use on a daily basis?

God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay.
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r
When we were gone astray.

Wouldn't many less usual Australian expressions have either an English or an Aboriginal language derivation? :D

How is it that some words catch the fancy of the hearer, and others just fade away after a single use?

Isn't that philosophical?

"The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." -John Muir
"Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down

Isn't there more likely to be a philological explanation than a philosophical one?

If we put the words on a leaf, would a caterpillar know the difference?
