Athens, Greece, dating back to well before 490 BC, when it successfully resisted the Persian king Darius at the Battle of Marathon, outside this City. This battle inspired the modern-day Olympic & Commonwealth running events, plus all the associated variations, when Pheidippides, an Athenian runner, ran from that battle, to Sparta, to convey the news & to summon help against the Persians.

And according to legend, gasped out "Rejoice, we conquer!", then dropped dead. Hopefully most modern-day marathon runners don't have the same experience.

Eel Pie Island, England. I found out about this small River Thames island, from a Tony Robinson travel documentary. It seems that this small island, which contains little more than a hotel, was a favourite haunt of fisherfolk & other boating people, where the best eel pies could be bought. 
Maybe a haunt for Puddleglum as well?
