Niagara Falls

Samarkand, Uzbekistan, first founded in the 7th or 8th century BC, conquered by Alexander the Great in 329 BC and prosperous because of its location on the Silk Roads, also by Genghis Khan in 1220 AD. Samarkand means the same in Persian (Farsi) as Tashkent does in the local Turkic language, that is to say, Stone Fort.
