Rottnest Island, near Perth, Western Australia, which was discovered & named in 1697, by Willem de Vlamingh, a Dutch sea captain, who also named the Swan River, after the black swans which are Western Australia's State Emblem. Quokkas are only found on Rottnest Island, & when we visited this famous place, in 2009, one particularly cheeky Quokka, named Terence by the café staff, was hanging around there, perhaps looking for something different for lunch .
