Ecbatana, now called Hamadan in Western Iran, the ancient capital of Media, in the Old Testament books, 1 & 2 Kings & 1 & 2 Chronicles, also mentioned by Herodotus, the Greek author of the Persian Wars. It saw out the Achaemenid, Seleucid & Parthian empires before the Romans became the dominant power in that area.
