Ferdinand Magellan, the great Portuguese Commander who, under Spanish patronage circumnavigated the world between 1519 to 1522 from a westerly direction. He died in battle in Cebu, Philippines, in 1521, leaving his crew to return to Spain without him. However, he had already reached India on an earlier expedition by sailing around Africa in an easterly direction.
