I think your Georgian town is called after Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette , a Revolutionary hero in USA though loyal to the autocratic Louis XVI in France, but also believed having a Constitutional Monarchy such as the system then in use by his enemy, in USA, at any rate, Great Britain . He had a chequered reputation in France & Austria during & after the French revolution, dying as late as 1834.
