Meryl Streep as Aslan? Aslan will be a female lion?

On the idea of Meryl Streep being cast as "Aunt Andrew" (I.e. as Uncle Andrew) or as Old Mrs Lefae in the upcoming 'The Magician's Nephew' movie. I would welcome having Meryl Streep as Old Mrs Lefae. Uncle Andrew is a harder sell, as I'd prefer to keep the character consistent with the book. (Though I would prefer this to having a female Aslan - but the good news it that the 'female Aslan' rumor looks like it has less and less substance over time).
At first look "Old Mrs Lefae" would be too small a role for an actress as talented as Meryl Streep, but they could expand the role. A flash back when Uncle Andrew is describing the events to Digory could have more detail. (Also, her role as Aunt March in Little Women only had just over 7 minutes of screen time, so she does not have to be in every scene).  Given Uncle Andrew says that she was locked up in Prison, you could potentially have a comical flashback (contrasting with Jadis's conquest of London later in the movie).
I do not think Uncle Andrew would require many changes if he were cast as an Aunt Andrea. (Admittedly, it is not going to make sense for her to be attracted to Jadis if she is a woman.) Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Uncle Andrew's selfishness, narcistic tendencies, alcoholism and eccentricities would not need to change at all if they altered his role to be a woman rather than a man. Both men and women have failings in all these areas. (For instance, think 'The Devil Wear's Prada' for a role in which Meryl Streep played a character with several similar character traits.)
So, either of these could work.

But why would Narniaweb's source tell them Streep was in talks to do Aslan when she was really in talks to do another character? From what I understand, they specifically asked for clarification in that area.

@davidd I love the idea of Meryl Streep as Aunt Lefae - and she has played similar small cameo type roles in other films, so I don't think it's beyond the realm of impossibility!

@col-klink , I can't speak for everyone else, but from my perspective, this current line of discussion is wishful thinking. I would LOVE to see Meryl Streep as Aunt Letty or Mrs. Lefay. Aslan, not so much.

I do have a question for other people who have seen more movies than me (which is about everybody), has Meryl Streep ever done a British accent? And if so, how'd she do?

@fantasia

the only movie I can think of where she used a British accent was for ‘Iron Lady’ where she played Margaret Thatcher.

She is famously a master of accents

@davidd yes, and shecwas very convincing

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.

I'm going to repost something I said in another thread (because it's more on-topic in this one):

I wonder, what if Meryl Streep is up for the role of Uncle Andrew in the movie instead of Aslan?  The character would probably be renamed "Aunt Andrew" or something similar. Or, Aunt Letty could be given "Uncle Andrew's" role from the novel.  The movie could still be called the "Magician's Nephew" if Meryl Streep played Digory's michevious and devious aunt.  TBH, it would actually be a more meaty role for her acting talents than Aslan (who tends to be portrayed a bit more stoic).

I really don't see a reason why the person who gives Digory and Polly rings has to be Digory's uncle instead of his Aunt.  It would feel less sacrilegious to some than the Aslan gender swap and it would give Meryl Streep a more showy role to show off her acting talents.

I also think he theory of her being Mrs. Lefay is interesting, although in that case it would more likely be a cameo than a supporting or main role.

@fantasia  In addition to using a British accent in The Iron Lady (for which she won an Oscar), Meryl Streep also used a British accent in The French Lieutenant’s Woman (for which she won a BAFTA and was Oscar nominated), Plenty, and Suffragette.

I’m not British so I am not the best judge of her British accent, but I do know that Streep is widely respected by other actors for her accent work; in addition to acting with a British accent, in films she has previously successfully employed Polish, Australian, Danish, Irish, Italian, Russian, Yiddish, and many regional American accents.

I do not believe she can play Aslan and get away with it.

Nor can she play Andrew  Ketterley, who fancies this amazing woman (Jadis)  and begins to think she might fall for him.

Aunt Letty is much more likely.

@coracle Agreed — Uncle Andrew's feelings for Jadis are a significant part of the plot and of his interactions with her (Lewis even ends the book with an amusing remark on how Andrew still speaks of her years later).

Also, there's a certain balance in having both a male villain and a female villain (admittedly much stronger and scarier) who both, in different degrees, indulge in pride and arrogance and the desire to control and use others. It's good to show those failings (outright sins, really) aren't confined solely to either men or women. Having two female villains — Jadis and Aunt, er, Andrea — would diminish that strength of the story. Ironically, in the face of all the allegations that C.S. Lewis was sexist, it would potentially make the story sexist where it wasn't originally (because now both the main baddies would be women). Eyebrow

If Meryl Streep really is taking a role in this film — and like others, I'm a little more assured now that it's not Aslan, but I'm not completely confident there — I would also say she'd be ideal for either Aunt Letty or a flashback to Mrs Lefay.

"Now you are a lioness," said Aslan. "And now all Narnia will be renewed."

Oh yes, and as the series has a male and female villain each (as it should be), then I don't see that there's any sense in having two female villains in one story. I know that The Last Battle has like three male villains Shift, Rishda, and Ginger (or 4 if you count Tash, but his appearance is brief), but still, two female villains in The Magician's Nephew? No way! Though I would consider Uncle Andrew more like an anti-hero than a villain because he does get better towards the end.

I actually thought of Meryl Streep as possibly portraying Aunt Letty. Though Mrs. LeFay does sound like an interesting choice. So maybe in the scene where Uncle Andrew tells Digory how he came to make the magic rings, a flashback of Mrs. Lefay while he is telling it in V.O. So that would be an interesting idea.

"And this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me beloved."

I'm not sure if Meryl would be playing a "human" role since filming as taking place at the same time as Devil Wears Prada 2, and in different countries.

@bluestarrr Both voice roles and minor in-person cameos can probably be filmed and recorded in a matter of hours or days, and often don't even require the other actors to even be on set in the case of the latter, therefore we probably can't use Meryl's engagements with other productions as a surefire sign of any involvement, or lack thereof, with Narnia.
