Hi all, just wanted to share the impressive find my wife and kids found yesterday at local market.  They had a stand at the local market yesterday, as one of my kids was selling scarves and beanies (and other similar things) that she has made.  Whilst there, there was a stall where someone was selling books, DVDs and CDs etc... they found a BBC TV series paperback edition of The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe from 1988.  I looked it up later in the evening and found that some people are selling the same edition for around $50-$60, but for me it would have more sentimental value, due to my love and appreciation of the BBC series when I was a kid.  Hopefully the attachment to this picture will work correctly.

How lovely! 🙂 I'm guessing it's re-telling the story with a lot of stills from the series, rather than a kind of behind-the-scenes look. I know I'd be tempted myself.

@sir-cabbage oh? I don't recall that ever happening.
My expectation is that it's just a front cover for the book. Back then nobody was printing retelling. There was too much respect.

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.

Correct - it is the a release of the novel with a TV series edition cover and photos from the series included in the middle.  I might scan the pictures in soon and post up here to see.  This copy was printed in October 1988 - it would appear that these editions were probably released in order to promote the series before it first aired on the BBC in December of 1988. I don’t remember an edition like this being available in the U. S.  It is like there doesn’t seem to be a book describing how the BBC Narnia was made.  I didn’t even know that a cover like that existed. I wonder if they also made a cover like that for Prince Caspian, Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair.

Ahh, righto! 🙂 I misjudged the size of the book in the photo – was thinking it was a bigger, companion type book! I dont wanna see In which case, I believe that's the edition that my sister had as a child and maybe still has it somewhere, though the cover not in such good condition!

@narnian78 Those sort of books weren't generally published by/for the BBC.  In the 1970s and 1980s they did make a lot of TV serials of children's classics, but the I never heard of the publishers making backgrounder books.

I do recall many years back, a school friend showing me a copy of the Prince Caspian novel (actually it may have been PC & VDT in the one book).  I don't recall the cover of the book, but I do recall, that like this one, pictures from the BBC TV series were contained within the book.  There does appear to be a few copies of PC & VDT combined edition for sale on E-Bay, the photos contained in the middle in the one I've linked (at the bottom of this post) seem to be as I recall, but from memory the edition I saw as a kid was a hardback copy and I don't recall whether the cover appeared the same or not... Hmmm

As for a BBC edition of SC - I'd assume there would have been one released, considering these two were released.

I remember back in 2005 they published a series of novelizations of the movie...one from the point of view of each of the siblings.  It honestly weirds me out so much looking back.

I liked the first three of those books, the ones about Lucy, Edmund and Susan. Sure, the writing was nowhere near as great as C. S. Lewis's, but it was pretty good. I liked the detail of Edmund mentally referring to Mrs. Macready as an ogress since that's not a very modern insult and it gave the tie-in book a slight period feel. I disliked the Peter one though since it just retold the events of the movie without getting into his head at all. I thought getting into each individual protagonist's head was the whole point of those books.

For better or worse-for who knows what may unfold from a chrysalis?-hope was left behind.

I remember those! I think they came free stuck to certain breakfast cereal boxes? 🤔 At least in the UK they did. In those last days of the cereal freebies...

@sir-cabbage wow! We had to pay for them at bookshops here in NZ.

I remember those 4 books from the Pevensie kids perspectives too and like you @coracle, we had to pay for them at the bookshops in Australia.  I just tried looking them up but can't seem to find them (because I don't remember their names). Hmmm

The BBC cover edition will probably not be reprinted since it was 1988 when the production was made. I actually kind of like it, although the text inside would definitely have something important missing if there were no illustrations by Pauline Baynes, which I think are inseparable from the Chronicles.  It would be nice if there was a book about the history of the BBC production, which could include photographs from the series.  I don’t think now anyone is ever going to publish such a book so many years later. Oh well, just be thankful that the series is on DVD for viewing. 🙂
