@coracle I thought it was really good for a school production. While not anything like the Logos Theater productions, sometimes simple can be good.

I don’t remember that a school production of any Narnia play was ever given in my area as a child. If there was at least one I think it may have encouraged my interest in the books. My elementary school teacher read at least three of the books aloud to us— The Lion,The Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Silver Chair, and The Horse and His Boy.  She had a gift for dramatizing the stories. I went to a small town Christian school and there wasn’t a lot of money at that time available for school plays.  But they might have done it in a simple way, and yes, sometimes something simple can be better than an expensive production for making the story more memorable. It can help you to focus more on the story than anything else.

We’ve really enjoyed the Logos LWW adaptation. Now it’s taken on a new aspect for our family because we’ve been getting directly involved in the production. Our two kids are regularly featured now. One is in one scene as an extra. And one is in four scenes, including as a mouse at the stone table. Neither have lines as they don’t give lines to small children. But it’s been quite the adventure.

I think I’m firm in the belief that the Logos LWW is my favorite adaptation (and yes, felt this way before my kids were involved). We took our nephew who was an adolescent and is firmly in the generation of kids growing up with Marvel movies as their standard entertainment fair. He immediately told me he was blown away and wanted to watch the Walden film, so we watched that. I was surprised how much of it didn’t really hold up very well and just seemed out of place. Some parts of the film obviously are excellent. But he and I agreed the play was better. The biggest strength of this adaptation is that it truly does a great job with the entire death and resurrection of Aslan. It’s really the only adaptation I’ve seen that properly treats it as the emotional climax of the story. When I watch the Walden film, the fact that the resurrection has no emotional impact on me really drags down the entire experience.

@rilian Nice that your kids are involved with the Logos theater production of LWW! I haven’t seen any of their Narnia stage adaptations, but I hope so one of these days!

A bit of a tangent, I remember hearing that once the Horse and His Boy finished its run at the logos theatre, they would make it available on DVD. Is this still happening? (As someone in a foreign country, I’d be interested in watching it virtually as physically is not really an option). Are there any similar plans for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when it eventually ends its run?

That's so cool to hear! Could they persuade you to get back into the acting world?

Since Rilian shared a positive review of a LWW play, I should probably mention that I recently saw an adaptation where Aslan was literally just a guy — New Balance sneakers, khakis, the whole thing. The script even made a point of explaining that he appeared to the children not as a lion, but as a completely ordinary man...

And Susan was the one who killed the White Witch 🤯

Gosh, that's far worse than the one I saw in London (described at the start of this thread)... I guess that's what they can get away with in countries where the books are already out of copyright. Shocked

I think that's one of the main reasons the Walden film fell flat for me too — I was holding out for Aslan's death and resurrection, and I was totally disappointed with the way his reappearance was more with the air of "ta-da!" than with any real emotional depth and sense of awe and majesty.

That's wonderful that your kids are involved with such a fantastic stage production, Rilian. I wish the Logos Theatre versions of Narnia would come over here to the UK!

I think they were in Edinburgh a while ago with LWW. They had to have someone redo the script for them is my understanding because of laws on a Brit doing the adaptations.

Full disclosure: They did get low on subs and asked if I could step in for some small roles and set changes recently. So I did four shows last weekend playing a soldier, a foreman, a butler, a reindeer, and adult King Peter.

@davidd The Logos Theatre does not have the right to distribute DVDs of its Narnia productions.

They are bound by the copyright laws, and respect the Estate.  Douglas Gresham, (Lewis's step-son) personally approved their scripts and productions.

(They once hoped to sell dvds of one of them, but permission was declined)

@rilian

The Edinburgh trip was a long time ago, and I thought they used their own script, but possibly not. The US script rules had them in a cleft stick until recently when they won a lefal case to be allowed their own.

There, shining in the sunrise, larger than they had seen him before, shaking his mane (for it had apparently grown again) stood Aslan himself.
