Greatest Hopes / Greatest Fears for the Adaptation of The Last Battle

Now that The Magician's Nephew adaptation is currently in production and we have a discussion about Greatest Hopes / Greatest Fears for the Adaptation of The Magician's Nephew, even though we don’t know where the series will go after that, it’s almost certain that it will end with The Last Battle. So I thought we have a discussion about what specific thing we are most hoping to see done well and what specific thing we are hoping they WON'T do or might even be concerned about.

On that note, I'll go ahead and start with mine-

Greatest Hope: Emeth meeting with Aslan. It's actually one of  my favorite scenes in the book and even in the entire series. If they nail that quiet, profound conversation on the threshold of the New Narnia, with Emeth's humble confusion turning to radiant joy… well, that’s the adaptation succeeding at its hardest, most beautiful task. They *have* to get the tone right—no grand orchestral swell drowning it out, just simple truth spoken gently. Now they may either have Emeth recount it in flash back like in the book or play it out in real time. The latter would be more cinematic and moving if done well. Then of course, it will all depend on the director’s vision. But I am hopeful.

Greatest Fear: My greatest fear is probably that is how they're doing to address that whole thing about loyalty, friendship, and manipulation. The book actually deals a lot with manipulation, with Shift manipulating Puzzle into pretending to Aslan, then Shift getting manipulated himself by Rishda and Ginger. So the whole thing is about, "Should I be loyal to Aslan or Tash or should I just not side with either?" In the scene where Poggin recounts overhearing Rishda and Ginger talking about how they don't even believe in Tash or Aslan and discussing their plan to make Shift do what they tell him to do, and even rally up Narnians who don’t care for neither Aslan nor Tash, it shows the whole thing about manipulation. Though I fear that they might go overboard with it. I mean, manipulation is a relevant topic, but I don't want it to make it into like the main thing. So they should not go overboard with that. I think it should be all about loyalty and friendship, Tirian and Jewel sticking by each other, then Poggin being the only dwarf to show gratitude for being set free, and even Eustace and Jill sticking by when things seemed to get out of hand. So I fear that they might focus too much on manipulation and forget about the loyalty and friendship part.

"And this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me beloved."

Greatest hope: My greatest hope is that whoever finally does produce this movie, manages to end it conclusively, without reviving "the Problem of Susan". Otherwise, my main hope is that as the ending of the entire Narnia Chronicles, I actually will stay alive long enough to see it. It was the 70's when the cartoon version of LWW was produced, and though all seven books have been reproduced in audio versions by BBC & Focus on the Family, we've only had a 1989-1990 BBC television version of LWW, PC (with only two episodes), VDT and SC. Plus, the 2004, 2008 & 2011 Walden films of which I agree that LWW in 2004 was genuinely magical, whilst 2008 PC & 2011 VDT have at least been filmed. I'm not necessarily convinced that a new production of all three of these movies could better Walden's productions, especially LWW.

@jasmine_tarkheena   I'm glad that you like Emeth so much, & I agree that Emeth's role was truly one of the better moments in this book, which I always found rather sad. Especially when betrayals & defeats are sometimes hard to handle on film, & when Tash does seem a particularly gruesome character. I'm wondering though if a new production is game to recreate the ending of the Narnian shadow world, which would be really spectacular to view cinematically.

Greatest Fear: Now Netflix is undertaking Magician's Nephew, that leaves Horse and his Boy and The Last Battle that have never been filmed, either on TV or as a movie. Magician's Nephew was published in 1955, when I was aged 7, & now I am 77. That is a long time to wait between book & film, and when The Last Battle is truly the last, there is a strong chance that I will never see either it, or the Horse & his boy, my favourite book on screen.
