Here is one idea i had:

* Meryl plays Jadis's mother in flashbacks showing the rivalry between Jadis and her sister. Perhaps the mother warns Jadis and, later, when she encounters Aslan, she hears her mother's voice, not what he is saying. (I came up with this idea when trying to get my head around the fact that Meryl was in discussion to voice Aslan).

Another option could be she plays Polly's mother (on face value, she would appear too old, but it does appear Polly's family are going to play some part in the film).

Or, it might just be a cameo, as a shop-keeper when Jadis goes on her London rampage -- something which, thankfully, we know is going to feature in the film.

Since I'm lazy, I'll just quote the relevant comments which all had good points. Normally, I'd hesitate to quote them here that since the comment section is less moderated than the forum, but these comments were pretty polite. 

Forrest:

To be fair to Letty, while firm and tough (which described not her treatment of others, but her toughness in being thrown across the room), she shows concern for Digory’s well being, trying to shield him from her rotten brother:

“Whenever tries to say anything to me at meal times — he
never even tries to talk to — she always shuts him up. She says,
‘Don’t worry the boy, Andrew’ or ‘I’m sure Digory doesn’t want to
hear about that’ or else ‘Now, Digory, wouldn’t you like to go out and
play in the garden?'” ….and she refers to her dying sister as, “But poor, dear little Mabel!”

I don’t think “mean to children” fits her as written.

Bolton:

Do you really think Gerwig would take a fully realized book character (and a female one at that) and reduce them to one that is a one-note, mean character? Even if she plays up a bit of Letty’s strict, “mean” persona for the children (which I can see in the book, especially from a child’s perspective), I can’t picture her as being a simple baddie without complex character motivations where she doesn’t care for protecting Digory or her sister.

Forrest:

I have no idea what Gerwig is doing with this character. I’m only comparing and contrasting what the actress has said versus how Letty is written. I get no sense that Letty is “mean to children” in the book. I didn’t say nor do I think Letty will be portrayed as a villain, either. Just that she’s not mean, not as Lewis wrote her.

F:

I really hope GG doesn’t intend to make Aunt Letty an unsympathetic character in the film. The last thing we fans want is to side with the Witch during their confrontation scene where Letty tells the witch off and gets thrown.

Bolton: 

I don’t think you need to worry about that. Gerwig writes fully fleshed-out, real characters, so the idea of Gerwig taking a well-intentioned female character in the book and making her into one that is unsympathetic to the point we’re rooting for the witch doesn’t make sense.

F:

This actress describes her role as being “mean to children“. Maybe it’s just hyperbole, but it doesn’t make sense for Aunt Letty, given that no one in the story (save Uncle Andrew) would think of her as ‘mean’. Yet I’m not really worried about this potential change; I’ve got bigger fish to fry regarding this Netflix-Narnia ‘revision’.

What do you guys think? The literary Aunt Letty may be stuffy and Digory doesn't like her much but she's also kind of cool in her own way. I'd be disappointed to see her made a villain and I wouldn't expect it, but Denise Gough knows more about this movie than any of us do. 

Crazy thought: Maybe they're reversing Uncle Andrew and Aunt Letty's roles in the adaptation. 

As such, I've been brainstorming a few ideas for actors who I think could plausibly pass for an older version of David McKenna (without the need to resort to excessive amounts of hair, make-up and prosthetic alteration) though I've still yet to find anyone I'm 100% on.

Although we don't yet know what decade LWW will now be set in the amended timeline, I'm going to go for a reasonably wide range of possibilities from 40 years old (1985) up to 70 years old (2015), assuming Digory is supposed to be around 10 years old in MN (per the original casting call) which appears to be set in 1955.

I'm also going to assume they will be casting Older Digory this year, either for a final scene / post-credits shot in MN, or for an early start to production on the second film straight after the first - or in other words, I'm taking their current age into account, not their projected future age.

So, in short, we are essentially looking for middle-aged white men with a somewhat stocky frame, that kind of look a bit like a grown up David McKenna. I'm also still not ruling out the notion that they might want to explore the "meta" angle of Digory as a surrogate character for CS Lewis himself, so i guess bonus points for anyone that you think looks sort of like Lewis.

I know Frank and Helen aren't the biggest characters, but we've already heard about the casting for a number of (presumably) minor characters like Mr. Potts and Polly's sister. But no Frank or Helen so far (unless Daniel Craig is Frank.) When will that change? 

@impending-doom mentioned it in the article already, but it echoes my own thoughts. This announcement was far more interesting to me because we had that sneak peek of the audition script where "Polly" says everyone she knows is dead, leading to speculation she was an orphan. Unless she's being raised by her sisters/siblings because her parents are dead, this clearly isn't the case. (And even then, everyone she knows is NOT dead.) So IF that line is in the movie, it's clearly not to be taken literally. 

But as far as actually casting family members for Polly, I'm completely neutral on the subject. I'll wait to see what they do with it, but I can't imagine they'll have time to deep-dive into Polly's back story much, unless the production shocks us and splits MN into two films. (And I think it was confirmed they were NOT doing that, correct?)

So, a "mean role." Thoughts? My immediate thought went to Jadis's sister. Buuuuut.....

Should this be interpreted as she's mean to children in the film? Or does it mean that this is a children's movie so she's only mean on that level? Not sure. If it's the former, I'm wondering if she might be a Polly relative. In the script the stand-in character for Polly implies she's an orphan, but I'm wondering if she just said that because she has a horrible home life or something like that? Or maybe Aunt Letty is mean in the film even thought she's not in the book?

My own speculation is some kind of household servant/help or gardener or driver for the Ketterley household. I saw some suggestions for one of Digory's teachers, which I think is also plausible. 

What I DON'T agree with is the speculation that maybe this is Frank. Much too old, much too weathered (thought I admit that can be tweaked with makeup). But I've been wrong before!

Picture number 3/6 down below in the line up. Is there any chance the lady following along behind probably-Digory is Aunt Letty? She could be an extra, but as an actress she looks REALLY familiar. I can't place her though.
